That is good news I apologize that I misread. I will have to give it some thought.
 
Is being all over it and giving it some thought one and the same?

The only other thing I can say is that Steve is a stand up guy. He's accurately described the condition of the truck and has it priced right. It will sell soon and then other people will wish they'd bought it. Kinda the way it works.....

Timing and cash flow do have big contributions to the equation. I personally don't have liquid 16,900 in cash sitting around. Most of my cash is tied up investments. So I am in the talks with both the financial institution that I work for and a couple others on the reality of something like this. Timing is another big factor as I am currently in the works of starting a new position so I don't have a lot of time for a project car. It ticks a lot of my boxes but certainly not all of them. I will not be guilt tripped in to buying a vehicle that I am not prepared or comfortable buying just because I stated that I am interested on a forum. I am sure Steve is a stand up guy and has some really cool builds and that is why I am giving this thought.
 
No worries, Knowbuddy, I wasn't trying to "guilt trip" you into buying my car, though I will admit to bustin' your chops a little with my "...waiting to hear from you" comment (hence the smiley face). Apologies if it landed wrong, but you kind of taunted me into it when you said you'd be "all over it" if it were diesel, which of course, as has been pointed out, it is. :p

Look, I've been a "car guy" my whole adult life, and have bought and sold a lot of cars, many of them that only appealed to a small, specialist corner of the market, like this one, so I know lots of guys want a truck like this, and lots of guys will talk about how they want it, but it's a whole other matter for a guy to pry open his wallet and buy it. I don't get too worked up over all the talkin' until somebody makes me an offer.

I remain perfectly happy to answer any questions about it, or show it to anyone who can get themselves to where it is, regardless of whether their stated intent is to buy it. I've already shown it to several guys who were very clear that it was mostly a dream for them, but since they'd never actually seen a Troopy in person, they wanted to see it. I was fine with showing it and met some great people in the process.

Still available. Lots of views--almost 8,000 here, over 10,000 on eBay, thousands more on Craigslist. Probably 100 email or text conversations with various folks. Dozens of showings. Maybe 10 people "considering" it as of today.

What I've learned is that everybody wants pretty much the same thing: A low miles, rust-free, 1HZ (or 1HD-T), LHD, a/c, locked, dual tank, original paint and interior, unmodified Troopy, preferably in green (seems to be most popular), tan, or white. Yeah, that sounds awesome. I'd like one too. They're not out there, and if they were, they wouldn't be $15,900. More like twice that to start. 25 years ago, Toyota wasn't selling such a unicorn in Europe or anywhere else. Gotta be 25 years old or more to legally import, so, no go on the ready-made dream machine.

What the smarter set amongst us do, rather than bemoan the dearth of exactly what they're looking for, is build it themselves.

There are others, of course, but these guys are living the dream, and they'll have just what they want when they're done. It requires some investment of time, money, sweat, and tears to get there. Don't waste away wishing for the impossible. Start with the best you can find and make it into your dream.

I’d be willing to bet your buyer sticks with 3b....does some body and paint diy.....and doesn’t spend an additional $25k on all that additional stuff pushing it to $41k all in.

It seems good to go as-is...A buyer will be real happy with the utilitarian 3b and troopy space and can do some easy diy over the long haul. of these two buyers.......I think this one might be less of a needle in the haystack buyer to find.

This is a great base for someone to start a nice LHD build. At this price, plenty of money left over to build to the buyer’s taste.

I was thinking the same thing--just drive it as is and fix it up as you go. Everybody seems to think they need to drop large coin right away after they buy it to get it mint perfect. Not so. Drive it. Enjoy it. If you want to add a turbo, maybe next year. Camp in it with a Thermarest and a cooler for a summer or two, then maybe build out the back. The body isn't going to fall apart. Fix the rust bits when you find time and resources. Meanwhile, you get to have fun with it, which is kinda the whole point.
 
I can not believe this thing has not been snatched up, yet.
 
I drove my Troopy from CA to OR on I-5 and there was absolutely no problem maintaining 70mph speed. The 3b is a good engine. I've written this before but I bought mine from Gilmorneau and it was a painless experience. I agree that if you are looking for what you consider to be just the right Troopy that you are going to be waiting around a long time....quite possibly forever.

This would be a great build platform.
 
I've been talking with @gilmorneau about buying this Troopy and he was kind enough to let me drive it to a body shop in Denver to get an estimate for sheet metal repair. I'm still considering this rig but wanted to share with others what I got for an estimate, in case someone is closer to pulling the trigger than I am. Steve has been gracious with his time and if I end up passing on this I want to do what I can to help him out with the sale. I took it to a good auto restoration shop (www.themetalsurgeon.com) so these numbers are probably on the higher end but would get everything taken care of to make the body perfect. Some money could probably be saved by providing sheet metal repair pieces, either OEM from Mr. T or aftermarket, and/or not going all out on all the little dents and dings.

"Complete disassembly (label and bag all parts): $2960
Media blast: body and frame, plastic bead blast on all outer sheet metal: $1500
Inner/outer right rocker repair: $4440
Dent on hood: $592
Dent on right front inner wheel arch (fabricate new piece and graft in): $1184
Dent on left front inner wheel arch (fabricate new piece and graft in): $592
Dents right rear door: $444
Dent on inner right structure (below window): $370
Large dents on roof-need to assess and update: $1184"

Estimate Total: $13,266
 
Hey, thanks for posting this info, should be helpful. I've had a lot of guys wondering about this, but you're the only one who thought to actually take the car to a body shop for an estimate. Looks like your body guy does top notch work. I may consult with him for other projects.

If I read between the lines a bit, I can see how an "a la carte" approach might reduce the total amount quite a bit for those on a limited budget. $3000 for disassembly could be saved by simply DIY-ing that process The rocker repair quoted is for full fabrication of the replacement parts, which of course isn't necessary since OEM replacement parts are available at very reasonable prices. Not sure what "front inner wheel arch" dents it's referring to--I think maybe it should be REAR inner wheel arch? i.e. the inner wheel arches in the back interior of the car? If a guy had plans to do an expo build in the back, he'd never see his beautiful new wheel arches, so why spend $1800 to get them perfect? Probably just saved $8,000 all together. lol....

I'm normally the type of guy who goes "all-in" on these projects but I'm just wondering if some of the dents could be handled by a PDR place. Some of those places work magic with dents that I assumed would require major body work. I calculated about $4300 in dent repairs on that estimate.
