I've always put the wrench on the nut and tapped it with a dead blow to break it loose.
That’s what I was trying last night, but no joy. I’ll hit harder tomorrow!

Bigger dead blow.
That’s a Primitive Peet approach to tool use. More leverage through longer lever arms is the ticket.

Admittedly, I do have have a rich appreciation for hammers and pry bars just not for loosening small nuts and bolts.

A dead blow isn't going to hurt a bolt if the wrench is solid. By hitting the end of the wrench your just increasing the force much like an impact gun.

It's better than going out and trying to buy new tools just to loosen a bolt that frankly shouldn't be that tight.
From what I've seen, it's 65 ft/lbs.

Progress!

I love making progress on this project. Mrs PNWTreeOctopus took our children climbing at the gym today and I stayed home and worked through my list fir a few solid hours.

Accomplished today:
  • New fuel filter installed and torqued. It took a silly amount of 3” snd 6” extensions to torque one of the banjo bolts.
  • New PS Reservoir and low pressure hoses are finally on the truck! Yes!
  • Pulled distributor and swapped the cap and rotor out for some new Toyota ones. The previous ones were in marked but stamped Made in Japan.
  • Installed new plug seals on the valve cover
I didn’t get to my DS today. I just ran out of time. Hopefully I’ll have those figured out on Monday.

I also managed to either lose or never order my distributor o-ring. I just can’t find it. I tracked one then but it will take a drive south to get it. I’m fairly annoyed.

I also should be getting my VCV from City racer quite soon, as well as my injectors from RC injectors. Im also expecting new rubber parts for the injectors in the mail. I still need to install this radiator and buy some fluids the the systems I’ve drained (coolant, engine oil, ATF for power steering) and I’ll probably drain the Transmission while I’m making a mess. I hope to flush the PS system too.

The last two projects under the hood are dealing with the heater hoses and plastic T, and having a look at the main engine wire harness back by the EGR pipe. The heat wrap is pretty cooked. I’m a little nervous to dig into this, but I’d rather know and figure it out now.

Well I have certainly reached the quota for the year ordering parts from my local dealer. My second intake gasket from PS never shipped $4.72 refunded to my account. I called Bellingham Toyota and purchased the same part $14. MSRP on toyota parts is $8.97, so I just paid 35% over MSRP...which is a great business model for promoting "I'll buy parts from these guys only when Im kinda against a wall or pressed for time".

I know, I should stop complaining and just vote with my dollars. I guess I'm always expecting them to be less expensive...why is that?
OK, back to work on the truck....the list is getting shorter, finally. I'll take some pictures of any carnage, I know thats why you're here anyway :flipoff2:
Have you ever asked them to price match? The Everett toyota dealership will get pretty darn close and their parts come up every Tue or Thursday, can't remember which.

They match for me minus any reasonable shipping expense but sometimes don't even ask for that. I even like them in top of it.

Disaster...well, not really. I neglected to order a Heater control valve. I think I had it in a cart with Partsouq, but wayyyy back in September when I ordered these parts, my cart was emptied and I had to repopulate the parts list and the HCV never made it on. Ive been looking for it, and through my receipts and it looks like I never bought one. But this gives me a chance to order a couple of water hoses that complete the water hose makeover. Additionally the hose clamps on the heater control valve are not very nice to work with. I can see that they are positive for clamping, but im not very happy with them. I'm not sure I can re use them now that I have them apart. Im struggling to get them working on the work bench, never mind at the back of the engine bay. I'll probably see if I can round up some sort of constant tension clamps like I used for my PHH, but they seem to be in short supply at the moment. My parts total is adding up. I need to make this rig drive again!

I haven’t, but I should give it a try.

Funny thing, regular worm drive hose clamps from ACE work on my 80 just like they did back on the farm. I know that the sight of just one single regular ole hose clamp would draw a gasp and an instant rebuke from the clamp lords here but I feel very compelled to share this little known fact with you. If the clamp lords saw how many regular hose clamps I have on my 80 surely I’d be excommunicated.

Say goodbye to your head gasket. I use the Toyota clamps or similar. I have some breeze clamps in my engine bay, they work but I don't like how bulky they are.

I have a set of these

And these

That make OEM clamps a breeze.

I have a pair of the non remote style hose clamps they help a bunch.

The hose clamps I'm hating on are like these.

The Breeze clamps are really bulky and expensive. I felt good using them on the PHH since I figured a constant torque clamp might be superior? I think I'm going to use a generic hose clamp setup on the heaters. I dont really want to fight with the odd toyota ones.

Herressy! You equated the venerable Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series to a farm truck?! Simply shocking.

...Actually I just used a regular old hose clamp to secure a rusting away heat shield on my exhaust down pipe...cause the old one was rusted out!

I "rented" a U-Joint tool from the Zone today. I'm hoping to tackle the U-Joints this week, but tomorrow my son and I are shirking responsibilities and heading up for openers at Mt. Baker. My daughter (12) informed us she was unwilling to skip school to go skiing, to which my son (8) replied that "I will skip as much school as possible to go skiing dad..." Noted. So I have some future ski truancy to manage in the years ahead. Remind me not to invest too heavily in his college education in a mountain town in 10 years (which is also the approximate time frame of completing my baselining).

What the hell is that?

Just so I’m clear do you mean the hose clamp? Does your JDM 80 have a different flavor of Toyota clamps at the heater control valve?

I hadn't even looked. Same clamps. Weird.

Got my Blackstone report in. Looks pretty effing good to me. I linked it below. I’m not sure how to post my .PDF as a photo

I think these numbers are hood enough to keep running my cheap NAPA oil and Toyota filter combo, but I think I’ll change it up. I have a bunch of Mobil 1 10w30 I bought a while back, but my 5w30 routine has been pretty good and conventional oil is easy to find in the boonies gas stations.

Edited: to remove my personal info, so curtail the massive inundation of good scotch…and spam calls.

Very nice numbers....you don't care that your name and number are out there so easy to nab?
