I replaced some of my switches backlights this weekend until I ran out of LEDs. This is the before and after pictures.

I will order somemore LEDs to do the HAVC controls.

All the LEDs are Natural White color & bought from superbrightleds

While fixing my climate control buttons I put in LEDs in all the switches and behind the instrument cluster. I did not change out blinkers, brights, shifter, but everything else is now a nice amber. Another LED thread has links to the website for "super bright LEDs". That was great and easy to order.

While I was at it I fixed the gas gauge needle. I had messed it up a year or two back while trying to wire in a front locker light. Since then it has read way over full and usually was empty around 1/4 of a tank. Better now!

New Alternator, pain in the ass!

Can you post pics to show improvement? Getting tired of the early 2000's green. Thank you

Bumping up this old thread, I am trying to look for replacement conventional incandescent bulb or LED bulb for my 06LX470 on the CDL light on the gauge.

This is the exact bulb:

Just to confirm is this called the 74-LL or aka #74 bulb?

And while I’m already here, does these gear indicators and the "Comfort Sport" knob switch light up? Also 74-LL bulb?

The “PWR” and “2nd” and up and down (for the height control) buttons/switches do light up.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I went red for my buttons and also "de-greened" the OEM radio. I doesn't match the red, but way better than the factory color. I'll be dropping an aftermarket radio in at somepoint anyway. Dropped in red courtesy door lights in as well to not attract the bugs so bad when we go camping.

I'll post more about the radio tear down in another thread.

For all of the LX owners ...

Has anyone replaced the backlighting for their instrument cluster? It appears to be a fluorescent tube - it sure acts like it when it turns on. Is there a specific part number for an OEM replacement perhaps? Or an aftermarket solution? Specifically, I have an 01.

I suspect the backlighting may be similar or identical for all of the clusters during the production run.

Mine arrived today. They went in tremendously easy. I was surprised at how easy it was to get them in. The only advice I have is to either do this install in the evening so you can make sure the LEDs are in correctly or do the job in your garage so you can see the results before you put everything back together. I put one LED in backwards, had to pull everything out and flip it. Looks great, even bright light all under $30 bucks.

Yes - I left the "D" light out. Thanks for the advice.
quick question- i have a 2005 j100 and want to replace several bad lights (heated seats, mirror indicators, key ring, gear shift lights) any videos on how to actually install these bulbs or disassembly of the current cupholder or shifter? Thanks in advance!

The panel (for heated seats, gear shift etc) pops out pretty easily once you start to gently pry it from the cup holder forward. Then you pop out the small switches and in the sides there are circular "holders" that twist out with a flat screwdriver exposing the bulb (same for the rear window switches). Pretty quick job actually.

I have a similar cluster and I tried getting the background to illuminate better. Bought some Leds, switched out the bottom four but got no difference. In fact, got a one of the lights (VGS) to turn on and throw up a code. Went back and replaced them with the originals and problem solved. Good thing these lights are not expensive.

Funny thing is that there did not seem to be any signs of other bulbs besides the bottom 4 (out of 5 - mine also had that one missing). was not able to improve the background lighting. 👎

This pic has the white cover off...

so what lights do I need to change to fix the warning lights? VSC and such. none of them work for me. not even the door warning light.

It depends on your year model - I believe that the cluster before 2003 was different, but I am not 100% certain.

Does anyone happen to know the Toyota part number for the backlight bulbs for this type of dash?

The lights for my main gauge cluster panel need replacing. My LC is an 06.
Will these pointers apply to an 06 or do they have different lights on the main board?
Thanks much.

I’ve been on this project with my ‘01 LC. It’s going fairly well, but I’ve got an issue with any light connected to the dimmer wheel. I’m 99% sure it’s not the dimmer itself. It’s been working fine until tonight. The dash was completely connected and screwed in. The dimmer was plugged in and working, and while I was messing with bulbs in the center console, suddenly everything that was controlled by the dimmer has gone dark. I don’t think the dimmer would just die on me, for one. Also, I looked at the wiring harness and saw two white wires and a green wire. I’m figuring the green is a ground and the two white are the in and out to the dimmer. I tried jumping the two whites together which should have gotten me lit if the issue was the dimmer. It did not. I highly suspect a fuse, but not sure if everything connected to that dimmer is on its own fuse or not. Everything else on the dash is working. But the background lights are out, the center console is out, and the hvac panel is out. According to this my suspect is fuse 9 in the middle row of the fuse box behind the driver’s footrest:

but I checked that fuse and it’s not blown. So without me pulling and checking every fuse in that godforsaken box down there, can anyone point to which other one might be bad?

Because otherwise I’m scratching my head. Unless the wiring harness to the dimmer spontaneously went bad on me, I don’t know what it could be besides a fuse.

Thanks.

I assume you had some "bulb/LED" contacts exposed on the board traces as you were messing with the bulbs. Any chance you accidentally shorted something?

Need I mention this is a good example of why you should deactivate the circuit before swapping bulbs?

Is every light source that went dark an LED?
