Today I got the engine out. It came out pretty easily even though its really long, heavy and very difficult to balance. Also it is pretty difficult for me, 160lbs to push the engine where I want it instead of the engine pushing me all over the garage  Now that it is out I have a lot of degreasing and painting to do. That will go one for the next week or so then putting everything back onto my good frame and dropping the body back on to it. Its not such a bad project once you start making progress!

i wonder how many 15 year olds have pulled an engine on their own.... its about time you get excited about the project!!!

wow awesome to see some serious progress!

youve about turned the corner to putting her back together. when are you going to weld in some sliders?

My plan is to cut off the rockers, or what is left and weld in some sliders in place of them. I dont think i am going to do that until the body is back on the frame.

Of course i have about 30 days until i get my license, but hey whos counting:grinpimp:

Today...

I didnt get as much done as I expected. I did some running around, I got some degreaser, paint, more PB blaster (they should give me a discount since i buy so much:rolleyes:) and I got the price for 4Runner calipers that I plan to buy on Thursday. I tried and tried to get me front suspension of today, of course some brother of mine (who could that be:confused:) left the oxygen for the torch on, so I didnt have enough oxygen to be able to use the torch to help me. But I got most of the front and rear axles degreased and I got the tranny cross member out and degreased. Of course tomorrow will be a waste and I doubt I will get anything done on it.

man, what a sweet project. I really wish I still had mine........one of these days I'll get another. Karl, have you become more familiar with the engine and it's mess of vacume hoses now that it's out of the vehicle?

nope, i have no idea whats going on under there. you? i replaced all the vacuum lines under my hood, and i got rather confused..... you better get on top of buying one....

Nice going! Good project. (Don't let any youngsters play around under that body that's propped up on those wood blocks!!)

So today I got some more of the front torn apart. I bought the 4runner calipers and I plan to install them after i get my axle painted. For people doing a frame swap. The best way to get the springs out is to cut the shackle and cut the spring pin mount. Then once its out beat on the shackle bolts or spring pin until you cant hit it with the hammer then get a bolt and keep on hitting it. I also tried a puller but the cut and pound method is better. Also the best way to cut the U-bolts is with a grinder and a cutting disc. Just be careful because once you get enough of it cut the bolt actually snaps because it is under tension, so just be careful.

Today was pretty unproductive. I painted a couple things, I cut another U-bolt and I returned a wrench that I snapped,:whoops: I guess I need to stop working out so much  I really like how easy it is to exchange craftsman tools! I only have 3 weeks and then this thing needs to be drivable! I guess I need to get some work done this weekend.

Hahaha thanks man.

I got my front springs apart and one put back together with the AAL. I found that I have a broken leaf on the one spring set. I also got the front axle all painted. Tomorrow I want to have the rear apart and put back together on the new frame.

Nice work man,

Its fun to see everyone's progress in different stages and methodology.

i think My build will actually take longer because im not taking the body off.

Keep going and Good luck!

I cut the rear suspension out yesterday. I have been trying to get the bolts out but it is taking a lot longer then the front did. I was thinking, is there any solvent that will rapidly breakdown the rubber? If there is then I think I will try it.

Today I got the front put back together and on the frame. It went pretty well besides puting the springs in backwards and having to do that over again. Too bad I cant put the rear together until I get a new leaf, still waiting for a certain MUD member to reply to my PM...:o. How do you like my shackle angle, looks pretty good, right?:D

Tomorrow I am going to pickup some supplies and do the cheating body work (fiberglass and bondo). I am just going to do one of the doors and the lower quarter because they will get replaced or cut out soon when I have the time and money. So for now its bondo. The majority of the body work I am going to cut and weld but the body is to far from the garage and the welder doesnt reach .

Looking good man, I just did that swap not to long ago and upgraded to an fj62 frame.

Took me 5 long days working more or less by myself. I was hustling though to get it done before vacation was over...

Well today I did some of my "quick" body work. Its looking pretty good. Also most or all the stuff I am doing will be covered by bedliner. Just a little note Bondo long hair filler is a pain to work with.

Fiberglass bondo seems rather easy to work with and is much stronger than regular bondo. Use it lightly though.
