3 link front? That's what I'm thinking too. 63's should be plenty of flex for the rear, no need for coilovers.
 
I'll agree with the 63" chevys being flexy enough.
I can pick any tire I want 3 feet off the ground and still have the others planted firmly on the ground.
And the best part is that they're cheap, it ran me a total of $270 to swap them in not counting the extended brake lines.
 
I got a bunch of comments about my plate while wheeling. Everyone loves it.

The only thing about the 63s is I for see it being a pain to get my ride height as low as I want. 35s are big enough for what I do. So I'm not going to lift it any more than it already is, really I wouldnt mind coming down an inch or so. Right now my rear springs are about as flat as they can be. I have my bump stops set about 2in off the spring perch. I'd guess I would have to french the spring and shackle hangers deep into the frame to get my desired ride height. Even if I went to 37s I probably wouldnt lift it at all. I'm all about cruising low and slow. With links this wouldnt be an issue. We'll have to see what my winter starts to look like. I really want some wider axles. Right now I'm running 15x7 3.5in bs with 1.25in spacers. The skinny wheels are great. I air down to 10psi and have no worries about losing a bead. I just really want to get rid of the spacers and add a couple inches of width. I suppose I could drop some coin on some wider bead locks with a more appealing back spacing, that could be another option. My brothers already claimed the linked front, 63 rear with locked 80 axles idea. So I have to come up with something new.

Despite being huge, the 63's are actually very flat. They should yield something not too far off from stock springs. And if not, you can always french the shackle or spring hangers into the frame a bit to get the ride height you want.
 
Well it looks like winter is over. At least I hope it is. So I drove the cruiser out of its winter resting place and started tinkering on it. I started working on installing my FJ62 rear speaker mounts/grilles this evening. Its nothing special or fancy. But I just made some some 1/8x1 mounts, drilled and tapped some holes for fasteners and viola they're mounted. Tomorrow I'm going to paint the mounts I made and buy some speakers. Shouldnt be too bad of a task to run some wires from the head unit. Having 2 more speakers will make the fact I have 2 10" subs a little less ridiculous...its a party wagon :rolleyes:

Wait an effing second. That's not a LC bellhousing, but looks like a downey SBC to Toyota tranny adapter bellhousing. What do you have planned?

Yup thats exactly what it is. Popped up in the classifieds last week and I bought it. The plan is to drop a 6.0 Vortec in. Not really sure when, I'll need to upgrade axles if I run a v8. So I think my first task is strengthening the drivetrain. Then the swap. Could be this summer, winter, next year. Havent really decided, depends when I have the $6k to spend.

My original plan was to get longs up front, locker, FJZ80 rear axle with chromo shafts, regear and make a 2FE this summer. But now if I put the 6.0 in will Longfields take the abuse with a v8, locker and 37s? I spose thats the $800 question.

I'm confident that longs will take the abuse. You should be good to go.

Nice find. A 6.0 will give you the power you always wanted and more.

And sorry to Hijack but, You wouldn't happen to be interested in a locked FZJ80 axle all prepped to swap into an SOA truck? And a freshly Rebuilt FJ62 front axle with all of the upgrades you would need other than longfields? I'm upgrading to 1 Tons and will have them laying around. As much as I would like to eventually use them in a buggy, I would love to see them put to use instead of sitting around for a few years.

I recommend you call Bobby Longfield and ask him if his axles will take the abuse. He will tell you up front if they will and whether or not he will warranty them if you do brake them. I personally think with a bit of self control on the throttle you,re good to go.
 
yes I'm sure you will be ok with longfields and the 6.0 engine. I have the same in my truck and I run a 5.7 vortec. I think part of the equation is how crazy you go on gears and tire size
 
I'll ask him when it comes time to order them. I'll be running 37s and sticking with the FJ62 3rds I'm currently running.
 
I've worked on building some sliders in the evenings this week. Here's what I came up with. Main slider is .250 wall 2x3 rectangular tubing, the tube is .120 wall 1.75 dia and scab plates are 3/16 plate. I think they turned out pretty well. I'm trying to figure out how to make some aesthetically pleasing and functional fender and quarter panel protection that would tie the bumpers and sliders together. The rear is easy, I just cant figure out how to get the front bars to connect to the front bumper, while looking good and being functional.
