Landcruiser Fuel Tank Recall Replacement

Does look like they’re gone. I’ve called around to a couple different sites.

Do you really think one from a 60 would fit?

Also, I saw they have one on man-a-fre…do you think that one requires a custom install?

Why not have an adapter made out of brass or something? I've done it on another old car I have and it works. Even if the sensor is larger than the hole it can still be made as long as there is a hole in the middle to allow the water to reach the sensor. Anyone with a lathe, threading tools and some skill can do it. Just screw it into the opening and screw in the sensor and there you go. Don't forget to put some sealant around on both ends.

Wonder if a 60 series tank could b made to work?

The 62 has an in tank fuel pump. You'd have to but a new tank and transfer the
fittings and bolt flanges. You'd be better off just buying the aftermarket long range from Man-a-Fre. They have one specifically for the 62. I have the FJ60 version .
Was an easy install.

I had my 1982 fj60 tank replaced last year under the recall. Now I'm parting my rig out. I'm in norcal dixon CA 95620. Hope it helps out a fellow cruiserhead.

I recently contacted Toyota of America and was shocked that my FJ qualified for the Fuel Tank recall. I have an 88 FJ62 and heard about this on this site, so I called and had them check my VIN#. Long story short...very short...it has been fixed for free. I am posting the parts list from that recall in case you contact your local dealer and they tell you that the parts have been discontinued...like I experienced.

(1) 77001-60221 Tank Sub-Assy, Fuel
(1) 77169-14010 Gasket, Fuel Suction
(1) 83361-20030 Gasket, Fuel Sender
(1) 77213-60030 Hose, Fuel Tank
(1) 77249-60040 Hose, Fuel Emission
(1) 77249-60050 Hose, Fuel Emission
(1) 90445-22904 Hose
(1) 95333-06040 Hose, Fuel
(1) 95332-10040 Hose, Fuel
(6) 96132-30600 Clip
(2) 90467-20134 Clip
(2) 96132-41500 Clip, Hose
(2) 96111-10630 Clamp, Hose
(4) 94183-00800 Nut, Lock
I contacted my local toyota dealer and they said they had no record of this vehicle (anybody have this problem) i was figuring that they didn't want to deal with it. so toyota of america is a direct place to go???

They told me that when I called three years ago. They had to look in multiple databases before finding myself mine.

You can check for recalls on your vehicles online here. It doesn't tell you when it was done (if it was done), but it will tell you if you need it. It will say "There are no scheduled recalls for your vehicle" or something like that if it was done. I just checked my 1988 Pickup and it looks like they owe me an egr pipe replacement.

FYI the links in this post take you to a very bad virus that got on my Mac. Avoid it.

I just bought an '89 FJ62. 243K miles on it. Took it into the local Toyota dealership to have them look it over, as I heard they have a pretty good Land Cruiser specialist there. It came up that my truck had an open recall for the gas tank on it. The parts have been ordered and they, and all the labor, will be free.
Now I just have to decide if I wanna pay the $750 for a new front Right locking hub assembly, and $780 for a break job (4mm left, apparently).

I wouldn't. Either do it yourself or go somewhere else.

Right, don't have them do the hub and brakes, at those prices. DO have them replace the fuel pump, and lines if they're looking ratty, when they replace the gas tank.

thanks so much. will do.

Thanks for the advice. Will do.

I wish there was someplace I could go to learn to work on these trucks. I grew up in a house where my dad didn't know one end of a wrench from the other. I'm pretty handy, but have lived in major cities for my whole life and never owned a car I could really work on.

Thing is - I brought it to the local (Los Angeles) vintage LC shop and had a bunch of work done when I 1st got it (new fluids, hoses, belts, general diagnostic - it needed a new battery and alternator) and he pointed out that the seals on the front hubs were shot and they needed to be resealed & packed. So HE already did that (for $750) - and now I'm being told that one of them needs to be replaced??!! Fxxxin' sucks. Do I go back to him and confront him and ask him why he'd charge me so much to work on a hub that was shot? 'cuz I am a little pissed that he did, at this point... (of course I'd calm down and explain the situation calmly and ask him for a quote on replacing the hub he already worked on) or do I look elsewhere? What would be a fair price for a hub replacement or a brake job?

Man, I wish there was someplace I could go to learn to work on these myself. I guess this forum is as close as it gets.

That is a lot to R and R the hubs. Can you send us a photo of one or both of them? One or both of the mechanics may be exaggerating-hard to say. If you can turn the hubs easily and engage the front axle, its not necessary to repair or replace, IMO.

So, this will probably come as no surprise to any of you, but after initiating a claim with Toyota, they got back to me and told me that since they no longer make the gas tank, the only option would be for them to buy back the truck and scrap it.

Not an option.

I guess since it has 243+K miles on it, the gas tank probably won't crack and send me and mine to the hereafter in a fireball anytime soon, BUT, that being said, I'm looking onto aftermarket tanks like the Man A Fre 38 gal. Which of course means moving the spare. Which means a new rear bumper. Which means $$$.

Re: the hubs - the right front hardly turns more than 1/4 of the way from "Free" to "Lock". I'm going to call the mechanic who worked on it the first time to see if he'll give me a deal on replacing it.

Most of the time those hubs can be taken apart, cleaned and regreased and they'll keep going for another 30 years. You can do this yourself with a tub of grease and no special tools (unless you think allen wrenches are special). Here is a link to a thread on the FJ40 board where a guy has done just that. His are the older coarse splined hubs but the job is pretty much the same. Warn Hub (coarse spline) Cleaning and Rebuilding

Moving the spare inside is a much cheaper option than a new rear bumper. I think I have maybe $20 in mine using tubing from the local hardware. Here's how I did it. Post #18 here. The Rushing Turdle
