Mucho thanks to the OP and everybody else for keeping this going. I saw the thread last night and called the 1-800 number this morning. My 60 is due both recalls. Stopped by Dick Poe Toyota here in El Paso and they got right to looking up the info and ordering the parts. The service manager said I should be getting a call by mid-next week once the parts come in to schedule an appointment. They were having a luncheon for their employees as well and, since I was in uniform, invited me to join them - so I even got a free lunch out of the deal! They are definitely winning my business.

I can check VINs to see if they qualify or have been completed if you guys want. Also, you should sticky this thread for the masses. :D

So the VIN check came back that both recalls had not been completed. I call Broadway Toyota here in Portland and spoke to the service manager, Cody. He kind of chuckled asked if I would hold so he could talk to the parts department. He came back on the line and said that he was ordering the parts and would get back to me when they are in so he could schedule me.

I will update everyone when I actually get it done.

With the 5.3 Vortec, it will be interesting if there are any issues or questions. But a tank is a tank right?

Update: It had been about two weeks without a word back, so I checked in with the service department on the status of getting the parts. Parts Manager said everything was in except for the tank and that it was on back order. I wonder if the demand finally exceeded the supply!

Just sent you my VIN, Sam. 1-800 number says it's invalid. Thanks for the help.

For those needing ammo to deal with the dealers

Sounds like an episode of Breaking Bad....

The NHTSA website (http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/recallsearch.cfm) has the following recalls for my rig:

  • (tank) "NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 91V110000; NHTSA Action Number: EA91002"
  • (belts) "NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 89V155000; NHTSA Action Number: EA89030"
I'll call the local dealer tomorrow. They were pretty helpful when I bought an '06 Tundra from them (for $30K). Let's see how they they respond to an '85 FJ60 ($2.5K and counting).

TOYOTA dealer, not (hopefully) meth dealer, that is....

Problem solved!

The Toyota website said the fuel tank recall was still open on my '84 60 but my dealer said that about half of the parts are no longer available and so they couldn't perform the recall. I just spent about 30 min on the phone w/ TOA and they determined, like others have, that the recall "kit" is NLA but the individual parts are. They called my dealer, got us both on the line w/ the service manager, and made sure that they were aware of how to get this done. The manager will order the parts and get back to me. I'll repost when/if this finally happens.
What was weird was that I could enter my VIN on the Toyota owners website to get the info, but TOA couldn't track my VIN in their system. They ended up using Toyota owners website like I did. Hmmm....

The dealer got the parts in stock PDQ and the service manager called me to set up an appointment. My initial contact with him was pretty blunt ("We can't do it") but after having TOA call him he couldn't jump through enough hoops to make sure I was satisfied. I've got the new tank and related hardware, plus they did the rear seat belt guides at the same time. I had taken my rig in running on fumes and got it back w/ 3/4 of a tank. Many thanks to all who have travelled this road before me.

I called TOA this morning. The fuel tank recall is still pending on my 62. I called the local dealer and they found the TSB. They need to do an inspection before ordering the parts. I'm going to humor them and bring it in. Does this sound normal?

An inspection of what? If the recall is still outstanding they should be replacing not matter what, TOA will reimburse them for all costs. Sounds like a parts/service manager trying to get out of doing it.

Rusty and old trucks = more work. He might just want to know what he needs to do so the customer doesn't have an even longer wait for parts that are broken during the replacement.

I agree. I don't know what they want to inspect other than the truck moves under it's own power and can actually make it to the appointment after they ordered parts. I plan on asking them why an inspection is needed and I am going to try to get a copy of the TSB as well. Since this isn't an 05 Camry in need of a brake job, they probably aren't too sure what is going on.

Very true didn't think of that aspect.:bang:
