Wow that Honda didn't make it! lol

His insurance (state farm) is sending an adjuster on Monday but I have a private repair estimate being accomplished on Thursday. I might schedule another just to have more ammunition since I'm willing to bet they'll lowball me. We'll see.

I wouldn't even bother with the estimates. Your best bet is to refuse the adjuster's check, and tell him that the shop you've chosen to do the work will reach out to him for payment. Let the shop hammer out repair costs.

The adjuster's job is not just underestimating repairs, it's also steering work to cut-rate shops the company prefers to use.

Good strategy. If I was going to get it repaired back to OEM specs that would definitely be a good route to go. However, my goal is to use the cash for new steel bumpers though. So getting the largest check to offset the cost of those is the plan. The interesting fact is, a nice custom double swing out rear bar is probably going to be cheaper than OEM parts/labor.

Estimates came in between 3k-4k. Now to see how hard state farm tries to hose me.

How much of that is for body/frame damage?

If minimal, you should be able to get a nice heavy rear bumper with swing out for that.

None. They added the crossmember/hitch in there ($1480) but it only has scrapes. Over half is labor. Turns out oem land cruiser parts aren't cheap.

That is a lot of scratch. I'm going to have to start having a lot more sudden stops :).

Wow. If I were you, I'd offer to get them to allow $3500-4k and let you just take care of it. If it's only scratched??? Keep it and slap a beautiful swing-out bumper on there in the same of safety.

Or just ask them if they'd let you do it your way, so long as it comes in under $4k.

Yup, the ball is already rolling on new (custom built) bumpers front and rear.

You can always push back on diminution in value if they push back.

Wow -glad you weren't hurt and that this seems to be working in your favor.

That 1st gen Honda CR-V looks like a tin can.

So for future reference, If you have full coverage ALWAYS go through your own insurance for repairs. This way you let your insurance company fight the battles for you with the insurance company of the one who hit you. They WILL win every time and get your ride back to factory spec pretty much no matter the $$$$ without any hassle. And with it being a 200, you have a lot of leeway before the repair total, totals out the vehicle.

I had my '03 Tacoma side swiped in the woods by a dumbass teenager. They estimated the job at $1700. When all was said and done the total repair bill was $5300 using Toyota body panels, plus a rental car for an entire month.

Absolutely, I should have added this.

The driver's insurance gave me an offer of $1800-ish and cut me a check and mailed it that day trying to rope me in. I told then to screw off and cancel the check. I then called my insurance (Safeco), emailed them the quotes I had for repairs, within two days I had a check on the way for $2622.46 (with the 1k deductible). Safeco didn't need to see an adjustor or anything. They're also going after State Farm for reimbursement for the deductible which, according to the claims officer, is pretty much a sure thing that they'll pay.

Awesome. I haven't used my Safeco auto policy yet, but had to for my home owners for theft and for the most part it went smoothly. The issue came when I was trying make contact to get purchase price reimbursements after my initial payout. But a firm email to my agent and claims adjuster got it squared up almost instantly.
