Giving away some free radio knowledge to the community. If you power up an fj60 radio with the power reversed, you will smoke it. I have seen this a few times, and knowing the value of these radios now, I will share with you the likely damage done. You will likely find a burned/open trace on the little electronic volume control circuit board. This board is in the rear of the radio above the amplifier board. Fix that first by installing a jumper wire between the nearest solder pads on either side of the broken trace. There may be other collateral damage, but this usually fixes it.

I forgot to tell you that my radio is fine. The 60's battery voltage was very low and wasn't enough to power up the radio. Battery was new a year ago and was on a battery tender the whole time, but it still went bad. I'd rather the battery go bad than the radio.

If you’re looking for the Toyota 5A, 10A, 15A, 20A Pacific Fuses I’ve got some.

Also, Stanley Fuses are color coded and made in Japan.

I think Cape Fear Electronics will live on for a while. I am retiring again from the rock and will focus my time on this. Only 61 so have to do something to stay busy. I'm going to get a real web site and try to make this look more professional. I have been repairing radios, emissions computers, carb fan relays, ac amps, wiper relays, etc. I also made a foray into the old VW idle air controllers.

I am looking for ideas to expand. Is there a demand for something out there?

i am having kittens right now reading this !

I'm very happy to hear you're back in business, Russ!

All of the 1970's and 1980's auto electronics in Euro and Japanese cars I'm familiar with could use your magic. I think if you can do some marketing, especially on social media, you'll have more work than you want. There are only one or two other people I know of who can repair these components.

How about vintage Sony Walkmans? 😂 I recently found my old one and have acquired more in the past couple of months. I've been able to replace belts and resolder audio jacks(common issue), but know nothing about adjusting and calibrating them. Just a thought.

If @Engineer8000 is doing walkmans certainly he can work on my TEAC 48 1/2” multitrack open reel machine … RIGHT?

Just kidding.

Cassettes aren't the same. Your walkman will pickup WiFi, I think cellular as well. The loudest noise to pick up on a cassette player is a receiver/transmitter for a cordless phone. Just press play without a cassette in it, and turn the volume all the way up, recording is even worse. The Fisher Price children's cassette player is kinda phony, it has a 'cassette,' but it records by other means.

Playing cassettes will work, just keep them at a distance, or build a Fairaday cage, lol. I think that my modern USB cassette ripper uses a very short cord for this reason, that and there is some kind of swollen piece, midway in the cord.

I discovered that my former printer's WiFi was on, even when the setting was turned off. Maybe it is like that so the printing dialog, on the computer, doesn't have to refresh?

How about 80 Series factory alarm units the "brain" part of it? Mine gave out a while ago and I don't know why, but I miss having remote power locks. 🤔 I think finding a schematic would prove difficult unless it's stuffed in a FSM.

@Engineer8000 I just joined the forum so I can (hopefully) give you some business. But more importantly, how is everything for you after Helene?

Looking for connectors recently, I ran across this 1P terminal that is used for the oil pressure sender.

I'm assuming a bunch of different models of Toyotas used this connector. Thanks for the p/n. Good to have a spare, or two, of these.

You never know what you will find when you open up these old radios.

after cleanup and return to service, this one also had some bad solder connections on the circuit board

I’m not an electronics guy by any means but i
cleaned it up and had it working well. Crazy that it succumb to the same fate again in only a years time.
