Smog delete in (belt is loose right now)

New belts check

Discovered the idler bearing for the AC was missing. Replaced with one I from a Mud member months ago. Check

Question for those that did the Smog delete from @FJ40Jim did it include a new log bolt and nut? Mine had a little slack and I may change it out (why the belt is loose), IF no one knows I will call him tomorrow.

Mine came w/ no extra hardware. I used what I had already existing.

Looks like your L bracket is bent slightly to your disadvantage.

Nice catch Ian, Yes it is and that is also part of the reason the belt is loose. I noticed it once I took the picture and will have to pull it out and straighten it.
I also need to trim the PS return hose a bit as it is about 1/2 inch to long.
Tonight's fast (I hope) job.

The PO or his mechanic was a gorilla as I have spent more time drilling and tapping new bolt holes for the broken ones than actual work.

The rear bolt on the Smog pump bracket was sheared off. Drill and tap and all happy again.
When I was adjusting the AC compressor I discovered another sheared off bolt. Now I need to fix that one. The will be the 5th I have fixed one this rig (1 was me and then just a small one).

Nice work! Tackling rust is my not my strong point. I was trying to look at your google map links and for some reason they all take me to some foreign website.

Odd they did not for me, I removed them for now as that was last year. This years trip (along with some mud ship deliveries) will be slightly different and less interstate and more local roads.
Driving out to Colorado will be 2.5 days travel local roads and Interstate. Then it will be a few days in the area, at that point it will be driving home taking all local roads and avoiding the Interstate at all costs. I am planning tat trip right now.
As I am meeting someone around Colorado Springs, I can take any route from there.
Every year I have a theme (including the vehicle I used)

2012 = Moab (Moab, neded I say more) and National Parks, Telluride (Alta Lakes) - Silverton (cus) - FJCruiser
2013 = was Steamboat springs (great fishing), Rocky Mountain National park (elk) - LR3
2014 = New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick Nova Scotia - KLR650
2015 = No trip as I had a new job and no vacation
2016 = West Virginia (fishing) and parts of Pennsylvania (why not) - F150
2017 = New Mexico (aliens and huge radio arrays) , Colorado (pueblos), Wyoming (Medicine Bow NF had amazing fishing) - F150
2018 = Colorado, back road adventures home - FJ60

2018 the theme is old mining/ ghost towns. I have been to Yankee girl mine between Silverton and Ouray and it was very cool as well as the old mining town on the way to the Alta lakes. Both super cool so looking to see more.

Very cool. I Love road trips too. I've been cross county in my 40 series five times now with a couple of trips to northern Montana and as far west as Pismo beach in California. I tend to shoot for the national parks and camp as much as possible. Last year I put 6700 miles on my 60 over a period of 16 days. Camping all over South Dakota, Montana, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. Id say road tripping in my cruisers is my favorite past time.

That's an awfully nice looking exhaust manifold

This week has been slow for work. Tomorrow will be a big day, finishing the fuel system is on the books.

But I have a question.

I have no use for the headlight washers, and will remove them completely. Is there a blank that can be used to cover the holes?
Or has anyone actually removed than and left them off.

I was thinking I could weld something onto there and fill the holes.
Thoughts?

How big is the hole? I can only slightly envision it. And how’s it held in? Guessing you can simply add a metal plate and attach to whatever is holding the squirter in place?

Ya i am going to take them off tonight and see. I have a feeling rather small so it may be a non issue, but i will take a pick and drop it online.

So the last few weeks have been nothing but family in town, me being sick and work. I have barely had time to sleep.

This weekend is the first I have had a chance o start working on the 60. Now I have a dilemma.
I have the alternator out to get some new hoses put back on (thanks @beno) where they are hidden behind the alt. and will also change the oil cooler hoses and the crappy looking radiator union pipe.

I was looking at my water pump and went back to the bills from the PO to see when it was done. It was 7 years ago or 38K ago. from what I am seeing it was replaced with a duralast pump. I have a new Asin pump in the box and debating if I should just go ahead and install it.
The current pump is not leaking at all. Thoughts?

That is tomorrow job either way.

I should just go ahead and install i
You said it, now it’ll start... and it will weigh on you knowing how old it is and not being Aisin.

You are not wrong that is for sure, and as I plan to drive this to Colorado and back this summer, it will be on my mind the whole way.
Hence why I am replacing so much to begin with.

Looks like it is tomorrow job and I will be taking as many pictures as I can.

Well water pump is in.

Crusty

Old pump off, turned out it was made in Japan by NPW. So it will now make a good trail spare.

Fancy

Nasty

Nice and new

All ready to be remounted

ON

Hoses going back on That hose looks bulged but it is far from it.

Oh and the PO was nice enough to put a new Rad in it for me.

So I did split the fan shroud. I was not planning on it. After taking off the fan and then the shroud, I decided this is stupid and split it.
I still have to mate it back up but I Split it at the center bolt so I can rebolt back together easier.

One other thing I realized is that i really hate the way they designed this cooling system. The oil cooler and the horrible patch work to get to the lower rad hose is a nightmare.

Anyways that was it for today. Between scrape, paint, fight the hoses, have to order a new hose (one factory oil cooler hose was to short?!?). It is back together with the exception of the upper shroud as It seems when they replaced the Rad they forgot 2 lower shroud bolts and now I need to get some replacements.

Next up tomorrow night, alt goes back on, fix the bent bracket on the smog pump adjuster and remove the headlight washers.

After that it is the long range tank install.

I need some suggestions.

Here is what I have going on.

I have an ARB up front with a winch ready to be mounted (ARB is test fitted) (brand new)
I have a LRA long range tank to install
I have a Dobinson rear bumper with swingout to install. (brand new)

My suspension is a mix.
Springs = Ironman med/heavy (gave me a solid 3")
Shock = Dobinson
Shackles = Ironman
Bushings = ARB

It will ride on Falken Wildpeak A/T3W 32x11.5R15 OEM (non US) Toyota 15x7 chrome wheels.

32's were chosen as after looking at the SHeet from NoCalFJ60 Gear Calculator (Microsoft Excel) Download.
I decided that this was a perfect combination, where it would not kill me to bad on hills yet be decent around town and on the highway without needing a 5-speed or regear.

So all of that said where am I going with this?

Should I ditch the front and rear bumper and revert back to chrome? or keep them and just pull the winch out of the ARB when no needed to keep the weight down.

The main reason this is being built it to go around VA, PA, WV and CO.

I question about the bumpers is to keep the weight down. If I ever need a winch I have a Tirfor type manual winch (TRACTEL® | Tirfor® – Wire rope winch) that is set for 3 ton. It is big and heavy. but will pull just about anything and is not fast. I also have a 25' and 50' extension.

I like the look of the off road bumpers but they seems overkill for something that will be off road 20-30% of the time. Last think i want is a poser vehicle.

What are your thoughts.
