corrected: no rear driveshaft.
i am looking at this and wondering why a new rad for the HJ45 would not work in your application. it was designed for the H series and the 12HT is a 2H with a turbo. or did i miss something here?

You are right. It would fit in the stock location but I dont have one on hand to know which direction the outlet points.
When I started looking into this conversion a friend in AU suggested the HJ60 rad because he had seen it used on a few similar conversions.
I could also modify the FJ40 rad to move the inlet and modify the outlet to point up and out to the right.
The 60 rad would give a bit more cooling capacity but I dont know if its realy necessary or worth the extra effort.

Some updates - modifications to the trans cover. The cover in this 40 was already modified for the 465 that was in it. I had to cut out those mods and modified it to work with early Fj60 shift boots.

last ones of the cover. The H55 is taller than the H42 in the 40 so the cover needs a little extra height in the center.
that cover looks nice.

for the amount of time and money going into this conversion i would suspect a brand new HJ40 rad might be a safe investment. the 40 series rad is more than adaquate for cooling that engine. just a suggestion.

I have a stock core FJ40 radiator with a modified outlet on my 12ht coversion and it doesn't overheat at all. I've been running like this for the last 5 years. 2 years ago i also put an intercooler in front of it with no ill effects on cooling.

I like how everything is coming together and where all the s***ers are coming through. But then again the 12H-T must be fairly close to the same dimensions as a 2F.
I must steal that trans hump idea for future use. It really, really looks good.

Thanks Dan. I think if you started with an unmolested trans cover you might get away with just raising the section around the main shifter. The tcase shifter from the 60 can be bent a bit without causing any issues and might just fit the curve of the stock cover.
FYI the center section is raised 1" on this one.
This shift boots I used are from an 82 BJ60 (should be the same for all pre 85 60s I think)

The length of the 12ht from the back of the block to the fan is pretty close. The engine is a bit wider due to the intake on the right side and wider low down on the left side due to the turbo. Its not as tall as the 2F.
Id have to check, but I think the bellhousing is a bit longer on the 12HT and the 60 shift tower is farther back than the correct 40 series H55 top plate. The shifter moved back about 3" in this setup.

Thanks a lot for the info. Can you post a pic of the outlet as you have it set up?
the 2H and 12HT are the same basic block, the bell housing is the same rough size, the shifter is 3" further back because the tranny came out of a wagon. you could have located a tower from Bj42 H55F and it would have fit into the stock holes but why? you needed to remodify the hump anyway, it is cheaper, just as clean.

reconfiguring the dual battery setup. If you look back at the earlier pics you will see they were side by side. There is just not enough room to fit them in that way with the 12HT so they are now end to end. I also incorporated a mount for the Racor filter.
This battery tray is similar to the one that was in it in that the stock battery pedestal is used and the tray mounted on top of it.

Test fitting an air cleaner box. This one is from an early 90's 5 series BMW. The top is flipped end to end to get the intake and outlet on the same end facing the firewall. The snorkel tube will connect right up to it and all it needs is a 3" 90 exhaust bend cut to fit and some attachment to the fender or engine.

Accelerator pedal and cable fitment. The pedal was modified by combining the stock 40 pedal with one from a RHD HJ61. The cable is also from a 61.
