sup y'all,

i think i have decided on goin over to the dark side by gettin a carb from Jim.

my question:
what year carb should i get? does it even work like that?

i have a 71-72 carb that i could give him as a core, so then can i just request a 74?

also, i have a late 70s 2F with no smog stuff at all and headers, so i'd like to get the best carb for the setup that i have...

thanks again y'all,
malphrus

email or call Jim, he will tell you what is the best set up to run on your cruiser and how he works cores.

I think what he ment by Dark Side was having someone else fix his junk for him. We still think you're cool. I'm sending mine to him as soon as I can. I'm tired of messing with my carb. Good luck man.

haha,
thanks man, i appreciate the vote of confidence

As if Jim needs more props...

When I finally saved up some money to get my 64 single barrel carb rebuilt, I resolved to just send it to him and pay him to fix it. I even had a rental car lined up for a couple weeks since the Cruiser is my daily driver. I called Jim and was supremely depressed when he said that he doesn't do 1bbl carbs because he has no way to test them, but he was as helpful as possible over the phone in telling me what to do and how easy it was to rebuild by myself (I had never done one before). And all this for free. As it turns out, the body was too worn anyway, so I got a Weber that runs fine until I get the FI system together.

If I ever get a newer cruiser, I'll definitely send my carb to him.

FWIW Mark(65fj45SWB) rebuilds the old Aisin 1 barrels, even has a few brand new ones laying around.

I havge a brand new Aisin 1 barrel on my 64 fj45LV and really like it, also run the 1 barrel on my 67 fj45 with 2f, it moves it just fine and is so simple

Jonathan,
I think running a '74 carb on a desmogged 2F is a capital idea. The carb has no internal smog controlled devices(such as the power valve) and should supply the 2F with plenty of power. I contacted Jim C about rebuilding my '74 carb and he told me what kit to order and how to do it. I've done 5 now with great success. I'd encourage you to do it yourself.
I just bought a kit for another one I'm doing and it was about $17, a can of Berryman's Carb dip and parts cleaner and that is about all your expense, unless you need a float which is about $3. Comes with instructions, too. If you are running a 2F stock aircleaner, you will need to make an adapter to get the airhorn of the carb to fit the underside of the 2F aircleaner. I made one, complete with the carb stud, which the '74 carb won't have.
have a pic if you need it.

Really wish I had known about Mark a couple years ago... I was bummed to get rid of it because it used to work so well, but at the same time I had sunk SO many hours into the rebuild only to find out that the throttle shaft hole was worn and creating a vacuum leak that made it impossible to tune. By the time I got rid of it and the 2 others I had aquired for parts (partial trade on my sm420 plate), I was having serious thoughts about the most torturous way to destroy them.

Since we're on the subject of carbs - any recommendations on kits for my '73 Aisin? I'm going to be rebuilding it soon for my pig rescue ... and really want to do it myself for kicks (the whole reason I bought this truck in the first place). I'm no expert (have FSM) - but I didn't think I knew how to do half the stuff I've done on this truck :D
