I actually put a set of blue ones in on the ferry trip earlier, but wasn't sure if I liked them. Now the stereo is lit in blue... May revisit the blue bulbs?

Radio antenna

I guess I'll post this in the electronic toys section also in case I get a few more hits there, but looking for advice on the radio antenna.

Snorkel blocks the stock antenna location. Don't really want to drill new holes in a truck already extremely prone to rust. I was thinking of putting something like a firestik on one of the ARB bumper top mounting tabs? Any other good locations? I also want to put my Yaesu 8800 in this truck (pull it from the Tundra), so that may mean two antennas mounted on the front bumper...which seems silly in my head. Any thoughts?

doesn't sound silly to me, its pretty common

I guess not, just don't think I've seen any trucks set up that way. Must've missed pics of rigs set up that way?

Other set up I'd considered was putting one antenna on one of the rear swingouts. My thought is that I'd rather do the am/fm on the back and the hammy on the front. Seems like a better idea to have the transmitting antenna not behind the truck.

So, guess I'm hijacking my own thread? Have been busy with work so not as much time on the cruiser.
Finishing up a week of work in Trinidad and I've seen a hundred new Hilux diesels. But this beaut caught my eye :). Its been parked near my room all week.

So I've been super busy at work the last few months and driving every few weeks is all I've done with the Cruiser.
I did get a moment on my Fathers Day (flying to FL tomorrow for a week of training) to get my pass rear door panel back in place, the rear door lock operating again, and my Diamond dual-band antenna finally on! Got the cable run into cab, but yaesu isn't installed yet :(. Will get to it soon I hope!

The day I get back from FL, will be driving it 8hrs to the inlaws near Pittsburgh for a bluegrass fest, lite wheeling, and some target shooting. Aka, a hillybilly good time! :D

Last time I drove it, the pass side wiper stopped working. Motor works and it does occasionally move if I give it a tap with my hand. Otherwise no movement. Is there a set screw or something loose inside??
Thanks!

Got my Yaesu 8800 installed a few days ago. Fired it up yesterday and Rx is definitely much improved over the mag mount antenna setup when it was in my Tundra.

Then I started checking up on Johnny C's (GLTHFJ60) build thread, felt ashamed that installing a ham mobile radio is all that I have done in 6mo and.......

Gutted the interior, cleaned 30 yrs of crap off the floors, cleaned out the rear heater, then laid out a box of Eastwood Thermocoustic barrier.
My buddy that I bought the truck from had purchased the Eastwood stuff and threw it in the truck when I bought it. Went in really well! One box (~$150, yikes) covered everything on the floor up to abt half of the cargo area. Will need a second box to do the quarters and doors and finish the cargo space.
Next is cleaning the headliner, installing rear speakers, and swapping the seats from my other 62 :)

I suppose I've dropped off the MUD universe for quite a long time. Had some family illness and a big job change. My poor cruiser has been a bit neglected over that period :(.

So I need to get her back in shape to drive to Asheville, NC (about 8-10hrs) in a few weeks.
Most of the work is fluid changes and getting the seats back in to pass inspection. One tire is leaking at the bead, but they have long outlived their time on this earth as it is already.
Main issue is the transfer case. Quick backstory is that I have a late-85 tcase that was rebuilt and installed by Iron Pig during the motor swap. The shifter has been sloppy since install, but I haven't had it in 4H or L much at all. Especially Low.
Threw it in low a couple weeks ago for a farm chore and was greeted by the sweet smell of gear oil pouring out the front seal on the tcase.
I wrote to Iron Pig and they said to push the seal back in and I'm good to go. We were both wondering why the seal would come out in just over two years and 1000miles.
My best investigative judgement is that the slop in the shifter is forcing the shaft to wobble as it's coming out to 4L? That pressure on the seal grabbed and pulled it out. Any thoughts? Anyone see this before?
With work schedule and time till the trip I'm going to have to have a shop fix it. But looking for input as to whether or not pushing the seal back in and replacing the shifter bushings will take care of it.

I'm not sure how to help you confirm that there is too much slop in the shifter (that's gonna have to be your judgement call) in order to test cause and effect scenario for explaining why that seal on the Hi-Lo fork shifter shaft is popping out like that...

I haven't seen it act like that before on my 60, but looking at how that dust boot is secured around the outer lip of that seal, I'm wondering if that rusty shifter shaft is grabbing hold of that dust boot good enough to pull that seal out along with it when you shift in/out of gear...

Maybe break that dust boot free from the shaft, clean and lube the shaft (insert joke here, please...) and push that seal back in.

If you decide to push that seal back in with the shaft installed (removing the shaft would require ripping the transfercase apart, and I doubt that is necessary), then you're going to have to find a tool that you can slide over the shaft (after removing the linkage at the end of the shaft - see red arrow below - and carefully separating the dust boot from the outer lip of that seal). So the hole in the tool is going to have to be just larger in diameter than the outer diameter of that shaft, and you are going to want the face of the tool to be flat and as much surface area on the face of that seal so that the seal goes back in straight and doesn't get a bent up...because if it does, then you'll have to get another one because it'll probably leak for sure...

...and press that seal back in really slow and straight (not on an angle)...like a ninja...

Just my 2 cents...

I'm going to try to get out in a few mins and poke around at it a little more.
I haven't seen the guts or schematic of the inside of a 60 tcase in a while- is there a possibility that the shaft can be pulled to far and pull the seal out? I don't think there is?
I suppose it could be that the a combination of sitting, crud, and maybe lack of lube on my shaft that pulled it out.
Will report back after playing with it today. Also hope to get carpet, seats and belts back in so I can get my safety inspection done!! I'm on the verge of being charged by the TLCA for neglect.
Thanks!

My wife helped me get the carpet back in and cleaned (finally- pulled it out almost a year ago!!), back seats from my other 62 in, and seat belts. Will put the drivers seat back in after lunch and if I can still find the bolts I can bolt the adapter for the seat bracket in to the passenger seat. Then a new set of wipers is all between me and a proper state inspection :).

As for the leaking tcase- had my wife move it from 2H-4H a bunch of times and the seal just slides out with the shaft. I push it back in by hand and it slides right out after 1-2 times shifting. I can hold it in place pretty easily by hand but as soon as I take my hand off it pulls out. Almost like it isn't seating into a groove fully? Or defective seal?? Shaft is clean and lube-y. Pretty annoying.

I just check my 'parts' transfer case...that seal should just press into the hole in the transfer case housing...but I think it will take more force than just fingers pressing it back into place, that's why I was thinking that you'd have to remove that link, remove the dust boot from the shaft and slide a tool of sorts over the shaft and press it in real good and straight until it sets, then reinstall the dust boot and link...

On the other end of that shaft (inside the transfer case) is a shift fork, which connects to a 'sleeve' which slides onto/off the gears on the output gear shaft. I can't see how there would be enough play or what is on the shaft (on the other side of the seal) that would push against the shaft to push it out of place. But I didn't rebuild the transfer case, so I can't comment on whether it was done correctly or not.
There is a ball bearing/spring set that holds that selector shaft into each of it's 3 positions, but if it shifts through all three positions (4H, 4N and 4L) and doesn't 'jump' out of gear when put into a position and driven, then I would reckon that that bearing/spring is doing it's job.

I just think that seal either has to be pressed in better or another possibility is that it is the wrong seal for that transfercase and is too small. You'd need to double check parts numbers and sizes, but it might just be easier to confirm the year transfercase you have on there and get another one for that model.

And when reinstalling that dust boot, I'd make sure it is pushed in as far up on the shaft (towards the transfercase) with that shaft shifted as far out as it goes, so that when the shaft shifts (whew...that was a tongue twister...a whole lot of shifting and shafting going on there...thank goodness no sh*tting), it isn't overextending the boot to where it is pulling on the seal (because that boot holds tight over the outer lip of that seal).

Now it's making a liar out of me, those I suppose in a good way. After finishing up interior stuff for the day I hopped under again. Shift it from 2H to 4L about 30 times fast and the seal is staying put. I'm not going to leave it "finger tight," but I guess it could have been that it wasn't fully seated? The tcase shaft is fine, no scarring, nice and smooth.
For a "tool," I suppose a short length of pipe with an ID just larger than the shaft OD? Few light taps with a mallet?
Pics are shaft in (2H) and out (4).
