Nice work!!! Can't wait to see it done.

Hey Pam, I am thinking about using the Raptor undercoating for both underneath and inside the tub. I was going to use black under and tinted to my color inside. What product did you use, and were you happy?

I used white Duraback on the front clip and Herculiner on the rest of the outside and inside. I left the inside black and used and oil based enamel over the outside to make it purple. Honestly I found that the Herculiner was much easier to work with, easier to cover with other paint, and much cheaper. Very Happy with the Herculiner.

sorry took so long to reply, just got back from Cancun.

Thanks Zane...

I have been working on the drivers side, almost got it done too. I need to work on the tailgate, and the major metalwork is done...

Here is a pic of the pass. side half door.

tailgate

Well, as I posted earlier, when I sandblasted the rear tailgate, the bottom of the gate turned to cottage cheese on the inside, outside was not that bad. The other issue i had was that the door was slightly bent. I was amazed at how easily it bent under some weight. So, my goal was to replace the rusted sections and to strengthen the gate. I went to the metal shop and got some 1x3x1 C channel and cut off one of the sides, to basically make a angle iron. I then welded on the weld nuts. I located them because when I cut off the front face of the existing gate, I cut it off as one piece, so I flipped it upside down to my new piece, used some longer bolts and went through my new weld nut backwards, through to the old cut off piece. This centered my new bolts exactly in the right place. To add strength, I then took a piece of steel and made a triangle accross the angle iron. This will not form the outside of the gate, just add structure to the angle iron and hide from sight. On the outside face, the angle iron is the final new surface, on the inside, I bent some 14 gauge metal and replaced the rusted section all the way accross.

That should be about all the panel work, I will prime them when the weather cools down. Next is to get a rolling chassis.

Nice work, Kelly! Can't wait for more updates!!!

Technically, I have not worked on this for some time; however, I am all about the exception to the technicallity. (if you ever have a tax problem, I am your man) So, I looked and was depressed :censor: about how long since I gave an update. I looked at my last pics, and decided that I did do some work that I did not supply any eye candy, so here is my update.

Finished the driver door, which turned out to be a pain. :crybaby: I did not test fit it as much as the pass. side as I was putting it together (translation: getting co**y) After it was all finished welding, I set it in the door and it was about 1/2 out of wack. :censor::censor: and a little more :censor: Well, since I welded all four sides of the door, there was no typical twisting. I layed it horizontal on the edge of my workbench and clamped that side to the table. Imagine it jutting out like a kitchen peninsula. I put a floor jack with a four by four post on the side I wanted to go up and jacked some pressure on it. I then stood on the opposite corner and hopped on it. That is 200 lbs jumping on it. It would not move. Guess I overbuild at times. :bang::bang: the only answer was to cut out all the welds:meh:, or what I did was to cut a diaganol line across the entire inside of the door and then twist. Reweld.

:bounce2::bounce:

Second pic is of the tailgate finished.

Final is the tub sitting pretty.

Daddy like!!! It would look a lot better sitting in my 40 than your yard!! I'll try to get by to look at your house asap. Thanks for the pics. Eric

It has been a while since I have been able to post up any progress on this one, so it is exciting to say that we rolled out the frame and pulled the tub off, flipped it and prepped it for undercoating. My Dad came into town and helded me sand all the surfaces down on both of my fj projects, so we prepped two tubs, four fenders, two tranny tunnels!

Hopefully find some nice weather this weekend to spray down the undercoating. I am using U-Pol Raptor Black that is being shot through a Schutz gun. I purchased my stuff from FoxRun tools online. Great folks there, and free shipping too that doesn't hurt the deal.

A couple places we sanded through the epoxy primer, so my plan is to mix up some more epoxy primer and brush it on to those spots, let it dry an hour to flash, then spray on the U-Pol, much like you typically spray on paint.

Awesome father son bonding activity. Congrats on spending time with your family.

Wanted to keep this thread alive....

Wife helped me get the seam sealer done on the tub over the weekend, while we seal sealed the Ol' blue pieces.

Was kind of cool to see the tub not as a collecting spot for loose parts.

Any updates? This one has almost been put in the archives!

Not really. Too many projects (distractions).

It has sat for some time now..... :(
