Is anyone familiar w/a fan motor upgrade on our trucks?

More checking would have to be done on this, but as I recall the fan blower motor in my FJ-60, and the one in my 73 FJ-40 were almost identical, in fact I was quite surprised by how similar they were. The flange pattern is the same also I think.

I'm looking at NAPA online right now, a new unit for the 60 is only $51.00, a new unit for a 1980 Toyota pickup is $81.00. I'd get the one for the 60 I bet it will bolt right up.

The 60 series seems to push a little more air than the 40 blower also in stock applications.

Something to think about.

picked up a Ford Escort motor over the WE...wish me luck :D

Finally got around to installing my ford (cough, cough) escort fan :D

Pickup an blower fan motor from a 90+ escort (regularly available in your local donor yard)
Don't look under the hood, check under the glove-compartment.

Remove the hamster-cage from the fan motor and use it as a guide to trace what needs to be removed from your blower housing.
(I used a jig-saw and a mini-grinder)

Re-attache the cage, and insert into the housing.
Take your time and rotate the blower flange until you find a spot that will does not interfere w/previous attachment bolts.
Drill 4 or 5 small holes for some sheet-metal screws and install.

I need to pickup some plastic spacers, and some weather-strip to complete...but it's pretty much done.

Thanks again B2BER

So how did this mod work out for you, would you recommend it?? Any hitches...

Thanks

So which moves more air - the Escort fan or the NAPA 655-1747 fan?

Hmmm, I went to http://www.napaonline.com and tried to look up a 655-1747 fan. Nothing came up under that part number. A search for "blower motor" on their website shows these to be in the part number range of CCC-937XXX. Further descriptions are by physical fan size, shaft size and length, voltage and rotation (CW or CCW).

i dont know how many there are laying around but the stock late model heater fan bolts in. if you have the metal housing you will need to trim a bit or the whole assembly from a 79 or so will bolt in . just need to hook up the wires .there is only about a 4x6 opening for incoming air. a fan can only put out what it can take in so you may have to open the vent a little for more air with a higher out put motor . for a simple test run the motor with the vent closed then open it if the motor speeds up then its starved for air good luck

I don't have any experience w/the napa fan, but from reading the thread...if it works in Alaska, I'd say It works :D
The biggest difference between the napa/ford fans is the necessary trimming of your fan housing (w/ford).

what's the condition of your current fan? mine was tired...which is available for a week or so (before it's tossed).

Since this last post was from 2007, does anyone have a better fan to use? Has anyone tried the 60 series fan? Does anyone have an upgrade fan for the rear heater? I just lost my high speed on my stock fan, which never seemed to blow a lot of air in the first place and my rear fan seems pretty weak as well. Thanks.

I wouldn't reccomend the mini truck blower as an "upgrade". While my 85's a/c gets plenty cold, it won't blow a feather across the cab. Weak, for sure, even on "4". I'm plenty ghetto with my walmart 12v fan, tho.

I have a 73 FJ40 with an 86 chev 350 (5.7L) engine. It's my second FJ but first one with a 350. Just finished replacing intake gasket - was driving down road and blew a bulb fuse and lost my headlamps, wipers, and front heater fan. I replaced the fuse but no joy. I cleaned the fuse box contact points, checked wiring, etc.. Looks OK. A light in the center dash that normally acts as the highbeam indicator comes on as a fault indicator when I try to turn on my headlights, wipers, or fan. The system knows there's fault in there but I can't find another fuse point or reset point. Does anyone have any ideas?

my fan motor is of VW origin - I'll check out parts # next time I am closer to the truck

You forgot to didn't you? :D

I would say so, read this whole thread and the NAPA part number no longer exists, the ford escort seems like an option..once it thaws out here..and DSRTRDR still has forgotten to VW part number ... :deadhorse:

geez, you expect me to remember something from 5 years ago ?

I won't be near the truck for another month but may be able to get someone to lift the number off it - if I remember to ask

:crybaby: I cannot see the pictures

why not  (phone users )

BOSCH 3 131 090 038
VW 191 959 263 B
VW 191 819 021

IIRC, back when I googled those parts numbers, the first two lead to the same part, and the third is for some sort of controller that comes with it
