Intercooler kit for SC- gauging interest

I am in, hope the cost can come down with all this intrest. I have the hole cut in the hood and scoop on just waiting to install a intercooler. I hope this happens as I need this.

The intercooler has been ordered and should be here next week. The machined flange should be completed next week as well.

I spoke to the engineer and he said that the fan doesn't make sense. Boost is not needed at low speeds (wheeling), and the amount of air flow needed (~4x ambient to the plumbed) would not be achieved by a fan. He's correct. The fans I looked at were 400 cfm on the high side. The IC core is rated at nearly 600 CFM. So even if we are only pushing half the rated flow, we would need 1200 CFM for the IC.

I am considering the fans for my vents though.:cool:

Hope to have this installed by the end of next week if both parts come in as expected...

Boost is not needed at low speeds (wheeling)

that's relative .. you can be in a position where you need all your engine power to overcome an obstacle at low ( vehicle ) speed.
 
When I buy this I can deliver repaired iPhones even faster here at Flagstaff iPhone repair :)

The supercharger is an air pump. It is always running, even when not under full load/boost. It generates heat. My intake temps average 20-40 degrees higher than identical rigs without the supercharger. At times it gets scary high, like over 180 degrees, and that can happen during moderate loading. I am very interested in reducing this temperature as much as possible, more for engine life than for power. Don't get me wrong, I DO like the power. The fans I am looking at are radiator type fans rated at several thousand CFM. More than adequate. Lifted rigs tend to have higher air pressure under the rig. This tends to increase the air pressure in the engine bay. That is why the Trans Am hood vents are somewhat effective. For that reason, I don't see a small, low profile scoop being able to move maximum CFM down into the engine bay. A manually switched fan will be easy to see/not see improvement . John

Curious what fans you are looking at. That would be great to get 2000cfm. However, the surface area of the IC is only going to allow ~7.5" round. The best fan I could find in that size is a paltry 400 cfm, which is essentially useless give its also drawing ~5 amps IIRC. I'd love to find a fan that might work, but haven't so far. The engineer was also concerned that any fan installed would also hinder airflow at speed.
 
I'm interested as well. Thanks for looking into this. I haven't had a problem with temps in UT, ID, or the midwest, but i'm moving to AZ this summer. I already have a low profile wrx scoop.
 
I am interested in how this turns out, haven't decided on whether I wanted to scoop or not yet... I already have the S/C installed for the past 30k mi with everything good so far.

My friend and I have been running our water to air intercoolers for a while and they seem to work fine.
It is pretty complex, even though it is theoretically simple.

One of the harder parts is sourcing and installing the radiator for the system.
 
Atoyot1031 - I have a few questions for you below;

Do you have any pics of the IC from the manufacturer that you want to share?

Are there any mounting tabs/threads to add supports to hold it in place or will the two silicon hoses hold it securely?

Are there any threads (i.e. 1/8" NPT) for Intercooler inlet/outlet temp probes on your IC?
 
There were no pics from the manufacturer because this is a one-off prototype.

I'm figuring on no mounting tabs due to the tight nature of the fit (~<1/2" between solid mounting points on the inlet and outlet).

No fitment for temp sensors. I'm not worried about the hard data, there are too many variables to draw significant conclusions IMHO. I can do the hand test, or surface mount, but the price was already high enough for me...



Now I must admit that I was somewhat aroused by my delivery from UPS today...

Delta T or temperature difference between the inlet and outlet would certainly give you an idea as to how effective the cooler is, which is certainly significant, regardless of "variables".
