I think ill start with the radio/climate area with LEDs and see how it goes. I dont have any dead bulbs in the cluster yet. Im gonna give those leds from superbright a whirl

@gummycarbs Do you mind if I utilize your research efforts and add these parts to my site? It would save people some headaches as this thread falls into the ether.

I already have about 20 of the DW-10s leftover from the last time I tried to source them (also from Mouser) but I never followed up with the others. :(

NLXTACY are these on your site yet? I was going to start shopping but could not find on A-W-E.com

Yep, LEDs flickering is a failure mode. The PROBLEM with most LED retrofits is that they are not spike protected (basically just a LED with a series resistor to limit current), and unlike an incandescent that doesn't care if a momentary 20 or 30V spike comes along, LEDs *DO* care. Some LEDs can take a bit more abuse some can't. Obviously the level of spikes is very dependent on vehicle wiring and load dumps while a LED is powered on (e.g. nasty starter motor induced spikes, winch load spikes etc etc)...

An incandescent filament is a lot more rugged than a semiconductor LED when it comes to voltage spikes. Of course the filament has its own mechanical sensitivity issues and operating longevity.

cheers,
george.

Toyota wants around $10 each for those little 1/4 turn bulbs that are used in the PRNDL cluster, the climate control, and most of the buttons. I finally found a reasonably priced alternative on Mouser: Mouser PN 560-DNW1-DW33 (manufacturer PN DNW1-DW33. $1.18 each. Shipping was $4.99. They're rated to produce 9 lumens at 14V for 5,000 hours.

The brown bulbs are OEM, the gray bulbs are JKL:

I believe the back of the stock bulbs say JSD or TSC V-2. LED sites seem to call these T4 bulbs. Toshiba seems to call them T1 1/4 Neo-Wedge bulbs. The excellent and detailed Toshiba lighting catalog was helpful in tracking down the right bulb, as was JKL's Neo-Wedge lamp listing.

The antenna up/down buttons use a smaller bulb. I don't currently have an alternate part number for that.

Here are some of the other JKL bulbs that should fit, providing different light output:

DNW1-DW40 0.040A @ 14V, 1.89 lumens, 10,000 hours
DNW1-DW48 0.040A @ 14V, 1.89 lumens, 10,000 hours (16V max)
DNW1-DW07 0.08A @ 14V, 3.77 lumens, 15,000 hours
DNW1-DW10 0.1A @ 14V, 6.29 lumens, 10,000 hours
DNW1-DW33 0.125A @ 14V, 9 lumens, 5,0000 hours

I just ordered the DNW1-DW10 which have a 10 mm diameter base and CNW1-23 which have an 8 mm diameter base from Mouser. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I’d love an all OEM replacement kit. Do it once and be done for another whatever quarter millions and billions of miles. I personally don’t want anything harsher and brighter than stock. Many thanks.

Interesting. My wife’s Subie is blue, and doesn’t go very dark. I have color blindness issues that affect me at night. Her car is pretty bad about it. The LC is not. I love that I can black it out entirely. I think I’d like red even better.

Picked up handfuls of OEM bulbs at the junkyard for pennies.

Don't flicker; not too bright; work well with the rheostat. Hard to beat. Any Toyota and almost any vehicle has them.

Agree, we always harvest them out of any clusters we see at the pick & pull, have a bun full of bulbs and don't recall ever being charged for them.:hillbilly:

Are the antenna up/down, the hazard, and the center diff lock button supposed to be lit when the headlights are on? I'm getting nothing on those buttons and it's kind of irritating. Not sure if it's irritating enough to pull the panel out (uh-gain...) until I replace my stereo head unit.

That's what I did, spent an hour or so prowling around the junkyard tearing out dash clusters from whatever Toyotas I could find and pulling all of the bulbs I could find. I got the entire PRNDL cluster off of some random Toyota at the Pick n Pull on the off chance that it would fit my 80 and it did. The girl at the front only charged me for the PRNDL cluster. The dealers want what amount to big bucks for these little bulbs that are free or almost free at the junkyard.

There was/is a thread over on tundrasolutions about different color bulb condoms available from McMaster-Carr. I had tried a couple of blue ones back when I had an '00 Tundra and I remember the results being blah. Anyway, different bulb condoms may still exist.

And.... bulb covers (condoms if you like): McMaster-Carr
If the link is screwey, here is the part number or sku (not sure which) 16925K11 you can select colors and diameter.

Thanks for the info! And here is what I found. The smaller bulbs are a 'T-1' size.

Original next to the 60 cent replacement with part number

And the amazement of all the lights working for the first time in years!

ECT is an original, CDL is your part number and the antenna is the bulbs above. Pretty close I would say.

I got all excited when I saw this thread resurface so I immediately ordered the Mouser DNW1-DW33 replacements recommended in the OP, but it turns out that they are NOT the exact replacements for the PRND2L bulbs. The OEM bulbs measured 80mA @ 14V whereas the -DW33's are 125mA. It's not a huge difference in brightness, but just to keep things original, I ended up using some 80mA "grain of wheat" type of bulbs I already had.

Thanks for this post!! Do you know which bulb will get my Drive (D) light to show that my transmission is indeed in drive? Seems like it's popular problem.

I'd love to get a kit or at least a list of what all I need to the the full dash console as well as gear shift and glove box (which I had no idea I had until last night)
