Lol, agreed the design was ripped off but that BMW engine is good!!! Thats their best modern engine in a loooong while.
Good in what context? I agree it’s a great engine, but something that works well in a typical BMW doesn’t necessarily mean it will be good off-road.

Not sure what their chosen design parameters were at Ineos, but that engine is pretty much universally praised. And apparently very reliable.
I guess anything with good low end torque is "right" in this instance? You would have to tell me. I defer to you on that lol.
BMW engines always win awards for design and engineering advancements, but I don't know specifically what the B58 is being commended for.
I just see a lot of journalist and fans talking about it finally being acceptable though and actually delivering longevity. It was not unheard of for the old inline 6s to go forever though. So modern era is to blame i guess, and overuse of plastics.
Ive been out of that scene for a long while though, currently trying to figure out exactly what features i will be missing by ordering a new model 3....

Fantastic. BUT it still has be put together and everything has to work together nicely. ZF tranny is not beyond fault. ZF 9-speed for example is bad...oh and that is used in Jeeps too. :D When is BMW power plants ever proven?!

Jeep Wrangler has fully boxed ladder frame too and dual axles and 4:1 TC and FOX shocks etc. Etc. Yet, it has disappointed you in past, right?

My point is…this is a new manufacturer and will likely have significant growing pains whether it be in design, suppliers, assembly issues, production issues, dealerships, servicing, etc..

How can you put so much faith into a literal unknown? Just because it has pretty shiny parts?

Does the LC need Brembo brakes or ZF tranny or “proven” BMW power plants to be a legendary vehicle?

Charlie…i get your enthusiasm. Great. Hope it goes well for you. But just stating that i am not on bandwagon, esp so darn early in an OEM history!

You cant blame them for going ZF, literally every brand dropped their internal developments and went to the 8spd a decade ago. Who else is left that isn't niche or commercial?

@DesmoPilot

Looking at those pics on my desktop now, did they go Bridgestone for all their fitments? Interesting...

they have two tire offerings that were discussed. Bridgestone for the more street oriented trim and BFG KO2s for the trail version.

Also, did that stop Toyota from putting the LS 500 engine in the 300? no.
I dont think theres much gap in truck vs sedan engines anymore now that everything is forced induction and has the same output dynamics.

At times I do wonder whether going more careless through life would make me happier. The problem is I cannot switch of my brain...
I'm in that boat. Have Four Vehicles, and the best days are carless, where I bike or walk everywhere I can. The good news is the less I drive, the longer my vehicles can last, given they don't sit for TOO long.

As per the Grenadier, I think it fits a void in the market that the LC used to fill. It remains to be seen if it is any good, but the idea is compelling, and if they are great and prove reliable, in 10-15 years I'll probably be torn between a used Grenadier or a used 2020/21 Heritage series, assuming those eventually depreciate into my budget.

It will, and I’m an expert on the subject 😜

Let me know how I can help

The answer on the later is easy

I would say German design and manufacture/assembly wise (parts come from various European countries, some not so great) a BMW inline 6 and a ZF (Zhanrad Fabrieken) 8sp is pretty good. Still designed for more performance than all or most Toyota products, so on average will fall short of longevity and a trouble free ownership experience, amongst which are annoying oil leaks from seals and gaskets. Agree therefore offroad at low speed, high load and temps reliability maybe a challenge. LC200 has proven itself there in the Middle East in the dunes and in the Australian Outback (be it the diesel sister).

Bottomline the all-round, all capable and reliable LC200 is unbeatable. There is nothing better, short of many lighter and therefore more fuel economic vehicles.

You seem to get stuck, on and wound up over minutia.

Go enjoy your truck…

See…. You’re welcome 🖕🏼😂🖕🏼

You should be a therapist, you are really really talented!

The B58 in the Grenadier has been detuned for a smoother power band and longevity. Its is one of BMWs most reliable engines. I agree with you on Toyota all around, I am a big Toyota fan and always have been.

The Grenadier is hitting a lot of the right marks though for a new vehicle. Triple lockers, solid beam axles, fewer electronics, etc. Wouldn't trade my Cruiser for one, but would bet on a Grenadier over a British made Defender with tolerances bigger than the gaps in their builders teeth.

But does it have CarPlay?!?

I joke…

I’m all for something new and cool in this segment. I won’t need to replace my 200 for a long time, or ever, unless outside forces make me. The price point should place it well beyond the buyer who becomes annoying as hell so I don’t think we’ll have to deal with a new cult of ‘Granedier Life’ types.

Its name is related to something that blows up and we all know how well that worked for the Ford Exploder.

I’m looking forward to the matchups that are sure to come on YT, hopefully there will be a 200 vs Grenade’r or however it’s spelt.
