Good idea. OEM is still available, but pricey
Whatever is gonna hold up the longest I'm not too worried about money on this build, I plan to build it out and drive across the us, up to Alaska, and down to South America.

"The 80 is lacking power. sometimes when trying to accelerate it just seems to bog down"

As mentioned (post #3) check the throttle cable they develop "slack" over time.

On our US 80 series we have either your ECT (93/94) or Power button (95'97)...it changes the shift points and will drive more "peppy"

Your gas cap shoukd be fine....worry about ur charcial canister being old and clogged that will cause pressure more than a gas cap.

EGR will not cause bogging....they cause a check engine light.-will not hurt performance.
If runs rich/lean, ur CEL will let you know.

Adjust your throttle cable
Inspect and clean your injectors
Add injector cleaner into your next fuel up
Change your fuel filter

I will try these thank you!

If all else fails, start building trust with a local independent "Toyota" shop.

Good luck

I don't know where you (OP) are located, but if your local dealer is 'family' owned (if it's corporate, I wouldn't waste the time), It might be worth checking the knowledge of the service staff. Where I am, the dealer is locally owned and some of the mechanics have been there for several decades, so I trust them. Obviously, this isn't the case everywhere, so use caution.

Nice cruiser! Mine is a 94 JDM as well. I had the same accelerating issue along with some bouncing rpms. I started replacing vacuum tubes (on going), pcv, IAC, plugs and wires, header back exhaust (OEM was roached) and flushed the fuel system. Runs like a top now.

That thing is sweet!! good to know im gonna do a general big tune up so hopefully that helps the issue. If you have any links for parts or diagrams id love to get ahold of those!

Umm, from the picture of the cat it looks as though your O2 sensors are blocked off. Only bringing this up as I am not sure how, if they are blocked, the truck isn't throwing a code. As preventative I would suggest doing the paper clip method and see if there are codes even if the CEL isn't on.

@fjsigs
A clogged exhaust/cats can rob power aswell, especially during acceleration. A mechanic shop can determine your exhaust back pressure.

I tried to keep as much oem as I could. Evergreen manta exhaust, local shop flushed my fuel system honestly those two things probably made the most difference. The IACV was from eBay. FOR Toyota AISAN Made in Japan Fuel Injection Idle Air Control Valve 22270-66011 | eBay - https://ebay.us/m/JT2G09 That fixed the bouncing RPMs. I run a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner every other tank as often as I remember to. I did the speakers as well just the other day. There is a video on YT just got those off of Amazon. Very easy install.

Great thread. As a side topic, how was your experience importing the LC? Did you receive what you were expecting? Who was your export company?

luckily I wasn't the one who imported it! I got it from someone who already did.

Looks like we've got pretty similar rigs. The first time I drove my 80 up a hill, I thought "Oh no - I've made a huge mistake. I have to sell this; I can't use this to go hunting/fishing/camping, it can barely climb a hill." I'd been warned that they were slow, but mine was "putting the automatic trans in 2nd just to get over a grade" slow.

A tune up helped a LOT, and I did adjust my throttle + cruise cables which helped, but what really improved things for me was removing the drivers floor mat. Someone had put what I think are 60 series mats in my truck, and it was interfering with the gas pedal. I wasn't able to trigger the "kick down" because of this, hence the need to manually put the trans in 2nd gear. If your's isn't reliably dropping a gear when load increases, try ditching your floor mat for a test drive.

As for the exhaust - I used to run loud exhausts on everything; I've probably straight piped more cars than most people have owned. After realizing that I see a lot more wildlife in my dads vehicles than mine, it occurred to me that maybe I shouldn't have a loud vehicle if I want to see wildlife. My 80 has an exhaust leak somewhere near the same area yours does, and my plan is a new header + 2.75" piping into some form of nice muffler. You definitely don't want to go with a big diameter exhaust as you're going to cost yourself low and mid-range power. Being that you already feel that this thing is underpowered, you probably won't enjoy losing what little low and mid-range you have.
