Good afternoon!

I own a 1993 80 series from Japan and had a few questions! 1FZ-FE with 290,000 KM

A little background, I'm 21 and have owned this cruiser for about 5 months and recently drove it 3,000 miles from Colorado to Ohio down to Florida. zero issues on the drive not even a fluid top off was needed (checked at every gas station stop).

1. My windshield wipers are intermittent and often don't work accept for random times when they do. I'm convinced its the motor but tracking one down has been difficult since its a Japanese wiper motor so its reversed from the us market 80 series. Wondering if anyone has any links or would be selling one.

2. The 80 is lacking power. sometimes when trying to accelerate it just seems to bog down until I give it a lot of gas then jumps up and goes. This is the 1FZ-FE so I'm wondering what I should attack to fix this issue.

3. The rear main and from what I can tell the timing cover are leaking. Looking into doing it myself would it be possible to do without a car lift and how complex of a task would this be.

4. The speakers are going out so I'm gonna be replacing them. How delicate of a process is it to remove the doorcards without damaging them and is there any clips I should have on hand before I do so.

Thanks!

1st off, nice cruiser!

1. If they work at all, I won't be the motor. I'd first check the wiring. Clean the contacts. Also, I'm pretty sure there are some gears in there too. Check them/listen for grinding. Part # for RHD motor is 85110-60170. It's discontinued, soo... check classifieds or a generic form ebay or something.

2. Its a 1fz in an 80. It gonna be slow! This is true, but what you're describing doesn't sound right. Maybe others can chime in. Simple things to check are filters and maybe the gas cap. IIRC, there is a vent in the cap. If that gets compromised and can keep the tank from venting, which=pressure.

3. Both are pretty involved repairs. Requires removing tranny + t-case. If not leaking too much, I'd just leave it. Could also try a stop-leak product like AT-205.

4. Door cars area breeze to remove. Toyota's clips hold up well, even after 30+ years. I'd go ahead and get a dozen or so, just for various places around the truck. You'll eventually break/lose some if you start taking random stuff apart, like me ;) (I've probably removed the cargo area trim panels a dozen or more times) There are 2? screws and then about 10 clips on each door. Trim pry bars are awesome, but not strictly necessary. Harbor Freight sells a set for less than 10 bucks.

Make sure to read up on what speakers fit. There are several good threads on here.

Happy Cruisin!

RE: question no. 2:

This sounds like it’s a normal 1FZ - what you’re describing sounds like the kick down cable doing its job (when it “jumps up and goes”) - it can be adjusted, but likely you just need to get used to the lack of power this engine has.

Fwiw, I usually drive with the overdrive off unless I’m cruising on flat or downhill highways.

Thank you for the information! here's a little bit more info and another question.

1. The windscreen motor only seems to work when the temp is warm which is strange. The rear one works perfectly but if its colder and I turn on the windshield defrost after 15 min it will start working.

2. Ive replaced the air intake hose after the old one cracked in half along with the air filter. The gas cap was replaced before I got it and I don't know if it has the vent. Most of the time when I open to fill up it releases a lot of pressure and you can hear it all come out.

3. Rear main is not the biggest concern its the leak coming front somewhere underneath or in the front that leaves a few drops every time I park it. Also my ac compressor is leaking so I was gonna replace it or rebuild it. What does that entail and how complex would that be as well?

4. Awesome so similar to the 3rd gen 4runners I had I replaced speakers all the time.

I've been driving with the overdrive off I rarely use that as well. The issue is intermittent and only happens when the car is warming up while driving. When I come to a complete stop and go to accelerate it will get stuck at around 2000 rpms and be very very slow when I start driving, then if I let off the gas and give it a good amount of gas it gets going again. It almost sounds like its misfiring on acceleration so the feeling of air or fuel being off but its intermittent only at colder engine temps.

1. Maybe someone smarter than me can tell you for sure, but the only way I'd see the motor being an issue is if the motor has greased bearings. If that's the case there is a chance that the grease could freeze. I don't really think that this is the case though. I'm still going with wiring.

2. I don't think that that pressure is normal, but I could be wrong. My 91 did that, and also had weird lurching/surging/bogging issues. All stated after I dropped the fuel cap.

3. Seems easy enough to remove, but requires specialized tools and equipment to re-charge. I'd take it to a shop for that, especially given the generally poor reviews of the DIY recharge kits.

Gotcha - your initial post didn’t seem like anything out of the ordinary. What you are describing here sounds different.

Might check EGR modulator/valve. If it gets stuck open, I'd imagine the air/fuel ratio would be off. But you'd likely have a CEL, but maybe not, as 93 is still OBDI.

1. I've tried digging into info on the motor but it's all pretty obsolete on the Japanese windscreen motors. Im in Florida so temps have been at 78 degrees and it still is intermittent on a hot day.

2. Do you have a recommendation or link for a good gas cap I should try?

3. Would it benefit to rebuild mine or replace it altogether?

Thanks!

And just for clarity, is this a fuel injected 1FZ? and does it have EGR?

Might just post a few pics of the engine bay

I probably should have tried to explain it better it's a strange issue to explain. It's almost like its being capped on speed no matter how much gas I give it until I push the pedal to the floor. while driving and its doing this the exhaust is making a sound similar to a misfire while driving and its almost puttering. Again this only happens when I'm driving the engine and its not fully warmed up.

EGR I'm not sure, it's fuel injected. here's a few photos

Does it do fine when it’s not under load? If you put it in park does it seem to run/idle/rev fine? Asking to see if there could be a catalytic converter clogged - but honestly diagnosing via text is always a shot in the dark.

Yes it does fine under load and when it's in park it idles perfect. My catalytic converter definitely has a leak or crack I think. Right under my door its making noise and looks pretty rough.

I'd replace, unless you just want a project/ and/or you're tight on cash, in which case, sell the cruza!! 🤣

Hmm, I'd probably try a tune-up (you can buy the individual parts or get a kit like this: Delta Vehicle Systems - Toyota OEM "TOP END" Tune-up/Oil leak fix - https://www.deltavs.com/all-products/toyota-oem-top-end-tune-up-oil-leak-fix)

I'm pretty sure 1FZ valves need adjustment, so doing that can't hurt.

I've had a similar issue (misfire sound) on a carb'd 1FZ, but with FI, that seems a little weird.

Before you buy a tune-up kit, check that all plugs are connected properly

Awesome, I'm probably just gonna replace the ac compressor as it's hot down here and I don't wanna go through a pain to try to keep it factory. It's all gonna get built out so the more functional the better even if it costs more. I'll definitely do a valve adjustment and do a tune up.

Thank you so much for the expertise!
