If my factory security system isn't working, can I just buy another RS3000 unit?

Hey folks,

I've tried all kinds of fobs but can't seem to get them to pair. I'm tempted to buy another alarm unit and try that. Anyone have experience doing this?

When I try and follow the instructions for pairing (tried three different fobs that people reportedly had success with), I get nothing; nada. If I clear all the codes, all I get is the door open light blinking.

I don't want to buy a $2XX viper system and then pay $150 to have it installed when $20 could do the trick (ex. TOYOTA RS3000 VIP Security System Electronic Control Unit 08190-00921 YOTA YARD | eBay)

Thanks in advance for any replies!

For twenty bucks, I'm just going to try it out. Wish me luck!

have you figured out if you have the rs3000 that takes the "black" or "grey" fobs?

I've used three different fobs; all different styles; all reported to work so, I'm thinking that's not it at this point.

if you have been testing with all greys and your base unit is made for the black fobs then you are pissing in the wind. i would make sure you have at least tested one of each. the color refers to the original OEM fob color that came with the truck.

pull the alarm out. open the unit and take a look. Mine had easy to identify corrosion which made the unit inoperable. I swapped it out for a working unit and it worked right away. There are a variety of aftermarket options that will work with the factory alarm.

They're not all greys. Sorry, don't want to be ungrateful. I've taken every fob angle or just about. I used three completely different style fobs. two black 1 button fobs, one two button black fob. They were all reported to work on various threads. My unit doesn't display any of the behaviors its supposed to with these fobs.

My original unit seemed to be functional but obviously wasnt. See if someone else can swap with you before ordering. I think I paid 30 for a used operating one.

What behaviors does your system have? With the ignition key on, does the Security light go on when you press the programming button? Once the Security light is on, you only have 5 seconds to press the programming button on the remote.

I also think it's worth considering that the 3 remotes you've tried would work on a different Land Cruiser. If you believe you've tried enough remotes, and followed the programming correctly, then the problem is in your alarm. I would not pay a lot to fix a 20 year old alarm. I'd live without, or buy a modern alarm (with remotes).

I bought the replacement I linked in my first post. It should arrive in a day or so. Then I can rule out the unit as the issue.

The security like blinked and what not but I've tried each fob probably 30 times following the instructions exactly. Before I bought another fob, it was time to buy another security unit (since they're the same price or cheaper)

I don't want to spend hundreds on a new security system; I want to keep it as stock as possible.

Trust me, guys. This is gonna work.;)

Good luck!

Just got one for mine yesterday. Took me 3 tries but works now.
I have a Lexus 2 button remote. What does the 2nd button operate?

Check your alarm antenna wire. When programming my fob it at first seemed like the unit didn't work. Finally figured out that if I aimed the fob directly at the security light in the dash and held it about 2 feet away it would pair. After that replaced the grey antenna wire on the unit and now the fob works as it should.

Grey wire mod (extend alarm remote range)

Alright, it didn't work.

I plugged in the new unit, truck started up fine. But I went to clear the associated key fob codes and got the same symptom out of the replacement unit. The door open light on the instrument panel flashes and there's some electronic beeping (not the horn). I tired this both with the door open and close (and locked) but no dice.

So I'm convinced it's something about the truck itself and not the rs3000 or the fobs.
