First post

Just picked up an 86 runner today. The PO had tranny problems (4th and 5th went out), so he pulled it and got a new working tranny from a parts yard. The working tranny was supposedly from an 89 model 4 runner and would "just bolt right up". Well it didn't, so he gave up on the project.

I need to identify what tranny i have and if it will be able to bolt up to the 22RE engine. Is there a stamp, a label, or a unique characteristic to tell me which one. Both seal plates had 8 bolts, although the bolt pattern was different on each. The broken tranny had the 8 bolts across from each other running up each side of the seal plate. The new tranny seal plate is a little larger, with 6 bolts acros from each other and 1 on top and 1 on bottom of the plate.

Got 1 more I'm havin trouble loading........

How many bolts on the rear output housing cover of the transfer case, 5 or 7? For spec it should be a W56, but not with that rear section..since the front looks to be a R-series..

How about a shot of the complete left side w/ the bellhousing?

5 bolts means chain driven, 7 means geared case.

Chain driven cases are fine and hold up amazingly well (*contrary to recent hype) and can be combined with a geared case if you want a really low gearing combo.

BTW, in true Mud form, welcome! :flipoff2: * Since I replied with tech instead of my usual tech and humor,
I'll let someone else lay out the joke reply to "How do I identify a tranny?"

* :flipoff2: ='s Welcome, :mad: means otherwise.

Well, thank you for the welcome, and......:flipoff2: right back at ya. I figured at least one of ya'll would find a little humor in the "tranny" reference. If not humor, then maybe a little horror.

So hear is the next question....Can this tranny be mounted to my 22re?

I say that's an R150F. I think the image on the Marlin's R150 page is of the R151F.

The Reverse switch is on the wrong side to be any of the W56's. They also don't have that breather between the shifters. Do some searching around, you can find some image clues here and there, mostly on Pirate.

I know some of Marlin's pics are off, especially when it comes to the top shift vs. forward shift stuff..

Then, here's the R150F from the T100, ignore the bellhousing.

That tranny is not bolted up to a gear drive transfer case. It has to be a R150F assuming it even came out of a Toyota mini-truck in the first place.

That's a V6 trans for sure, and will not bolt to a 22RE. You're PO was a titan of intellect and got the wrong trans. Welcome to Mud!!!! :flipoff2:

May not be the P/O's fault, maybe Billy Bob Jimmy-Joe screwed up and gave the wrong transmission, even as far as accidentally giving an AX-5 Jeep trans.

Yep, AFAIK the only way to use that trans behind a 22re is with R151F (turbo tranny) bellhousing....

BTW, that bellhousing was still available from Toyota a few years ago ... special order from Japan. Problem is, getting the correct tranny from a boneyard would be cheaper.
