I need to make a tough decision, what's your gut say?

I jumped on 127k mile 1999 LX470 in perfect condition (literally almost no wear inside, smells/looks new) all Lexus dealer oil changes and maintenance. CA car with zero rust, and it was cheap!

But being my first 100 series purchase, i failed to realized I'd probably rather have a 2004 or newer after reading up on this forum. So I've been on the look for a 2004 with low miles in my price range here in CA and I've found the closest one in my same price range.

2004 Lx470 164k miles. CA car, same dealer maintained, but shows signs of wear in the leather and stains in carpet etc.

I am sure I'll be able to sell my 1999 since it's so perfect (maybe even make 1 or 2 grand on top) so I'm fine buying this one now and not worried about selling our current LX on craigslist. But I'm not sure if i'm going to be kicking myself later for jumping ship on such a perfect lower mile 100 just for the 5th gear and newer styling inside. They are just about the same price give or take 1/2 grand. So im tradeing 30k miles + a little dirtier car for a 5th gear, back up camera and newer styling.

What would you do?

What would you sell the '99 for?

OK- I'm keeping the 99, you guys settled it. I'll have a pro do the backup camera and double din since the Nakamichi is a complicated switch.

You're right, I should have mentioned my intended use. I bought this for my wife to be an around-town-mom-mobile. Not to say we will never take it on some trails during a camping trip to Yosemite or something but I already own a locked 80 to go get dirty in.

I appreciate all the input, and thanks for all the expertise

I missed the re-fresh before I replied. I would keep that as well.

Please let us know how you re-fresh the Nak. I am in the same boat but want to know what I am doing before I start disturbing things...

For this intended use, you've made the right decision. Keep it and don't look back

I personally would never want a '98 or '99 100. Only 2000 or newer.

Agreed. You made the right call , thats a nice cruiser , I wouldn't even think about the tranny or diff for your use they would be non issues I would think

Listen to @BullElk.

Therefore, sell that '99 to me:confused:.

Nice looking 99!

You can always keep an eye out for a nice 03+ specimen. The 06+ air injection is a $200 fix.

Does the 99 have the rear locker ? if not go newer with ATRAC..

Unless it was originally a non-US LX, it shouldn't have the rear locker. It goes back to use case, I might see an argument for VSC, but how is ATRAC or a rear locker really going to be better for an "around-town-mom-mobile" in Laguna Beach ?

I would agree no need for those if not seeing dirt, I guess I switched into wheeling mode.. :steer:

Good choice. 5sp is overrated as is NAV, besides 04 to early 05 have transmission issue that needs to have been/be address. "Low speed shutter TSB"

5sp is overrated

You'd have to go to 5.29 gear sets, on a 4spd, to get a better 1st gear. Overrated, not hardly. Mandatory, not really.

04 to early 05 have transmission issue that needs to have been/be address. "Low speed shutter TSB"

You seem obsessed about this TSB, which is about the breather potentially allowing water into the trans, and an updated breather fixes the issue. I know there have been a few postings on mud from owners with this issue, but how many 04-05 owners that haven't (or had it addressed under warranty)?

What about these (also blown out of proportion) issues?
98-99 weaker 2 pinion front diff
00-01 premature transmission failures
98-04,06 Brake failures
04 MFD issues
04-05 Transmission breather issue
05+ non-ARACO
06-07 VVTI possible interference engine on timing belt breakage

If you can find some factory '06-'07 LX wheels, that will modernize the look of the exterior considerably. Good call on keeping the '99 though - it looks to be in amazing condition.

Like this? 98 with 200 series 17" wheels.

Keep the beautifully maintained older LX!

you need a LED light bar mounted right on that roof rack......... ;)
I rarely ever wheel at night. When I do, the front LED bar is ok. However, if I run across a good deal ill consider it just for the Expo look!
