Try telling him you'll beat the ever-loving crap out of it in the dirt. The lady who sold me my Cruiser said she turned down another offer just to know it would get dirty and "see the sights" as she put it. Tell him you're going to use it for what it was meant to do...go places no other truck can go. Tell him to imagine his Cruiser deep in Baja, or Death Valley, running in ungodly temperatures, harsh conditions, filled with gear, your lifeline to a safe return. Tell him this vehicle will have a very special place in your life, that you will enjoy it and love it far more than the next shlemiel, who will just treat it like some disposable piece of junk. If that doesn't sway him a couple hundred, he's a heartless creep. You have my permission to kick his ass and take the Cruiser.

hahahhaha i told this to the guy i bought mine from.... i ended emailing him photos of it all built up in its current state and he never emailed me back LOL

For me it always comes down to: will I regret it if someone else buys it out from under me.

And just as a heads up, my credit union will finance up to 100% of the retail value and they don't care about mileage. I'm sure there are others out there that will do the same.

My credit union will do that too but most do not have that option. Ever tried to get an auto loan through BofA or Wells PITA.

you're right. Most banks are a joke right now.

I just wouldn't count on someone else not being able to get financing as a reason to wait on buying.

There are a lot of good reasons to wait and work the guy for a better price. I would just not count on lack of finacing as one of them. :p

Think about it this way. It's arguably the best year (airbags, OBDII), in the best condition, in an offroading friendly color, with low miles and service records, and lockers. That is a very difficult combo to find. If that's what you want and if you're still shopping for that combo in 6 months, you'll be upset that you didn't buy it. If you'd rather save $4k and buy an inferior truck, you can take your pick out there. But to find another such as what you've described it to be will be very difficult. If you're willing to pay $9k for , it's just an extra grand and you have the truck. No more obsessing over Craiglist and AutoTrader, wasting time hunting.

I say buy the truck and be happy. The extra $1000 won't matter one bit by the time you've modded and serviced the truck anyway.

I just went to E-loan.com on my lunch break and borrowed $8K.

My point on the financing issue was ít's another tool to use during his discussion with the owner. The more weapons you have to cast doubt the better. The fact is you have the financing done cash in hand. Other buyers may not be able to aquire it at 10k. Pick a reason, credit score miles, loan to value, year of the LC, job history. There are a lot of reasons a bank could turn down a loan on this car.

I agree with you 100%. It's a great tool to use to negotiate with the seller, especially because he has cash in hand.

I was more worried about him losing the truck becuase he thought no one else would show up with cash in hand. I must have missunderstood your point :o

I bought my latest 80 a couple of weeks ago, but I had two bought out from underneath me by other people who had financing before I succeeded in buying mine  I think that the prices are low enough now that the trucks with lockers get snatched up pretty quickly. At least that's been my experience.

I finally decided to buy one much cheaper that needed a bunch of work, but thats not for everyone. Most people don't want to buy a vehicle that immediately needs maintenance. I don't mind it if the deal is good enough.

If this truck had been available when I was looking, I would have bought it quickly. Just food for thought.

Point well taken,I did not think these rigs were moving very well. Looks like the clean ones w/ lockers and low miles are still in demand. I like your route better. Keeps a lot more cash in hand for mods. If you have the skills and it's not your daily driver this is the way to go.

I guess I'm spoiled. I want one that still has the nice interior, locked, nice paint, that I can wheel the wholy :censor: out of.

The more I think about it....its only money!

Thanks everyone for you comments. In the end I decided to pass on the purchase. 10k just seemed a bit too much.....not to worry though...... I'm checking out a locked 97, 40th Anniversary with 125,xxx. So far the pics look promising. I will keep you posted.

in Ventura at the Honda dealership, they have an old 60 all spray painted, cash for clunkers....

I cried....
almost turned around and begged then to give it to me instead of crushing it.....

then I saw the toyota add on TV, and they even do the same thing!

sacrilage.

go buy it already.

I pm'd the owner and left a message....we will see. It's $200 for a one way ticket to San Antonio.

Damn - less money, even with the flight to TX and it's got several thousand in mods already done to the truck to boot!

Good luck Murphy744!

Well the search has ended. I'm trying to fly out this weekend to pick her up.
