Ok,
Here is the deal. I found a 97, white, loaded, with factory lockers, 126,xxx mi. The interior is almost perfect. The leather is in excellent shape, no tears, cracks or scrapes. The body is in excellent shape. The owner keeps up on the services to the letter. No leaks, the birfs look good, engine (head) looks fine.

The guy wants $10k. I got him down from $10.5, but he wont budge. Is this still too much to fork over for an 80????

Just looking for a couple of educated opinions

That doesn't sound like a bad deal for one with that few miles. I'd probably buy it if it were me.

I may just be a sucker though. ;)

10k sounds a little high to me. This LC appears to have all the desirable items you want in a used 80. Clean, lockers, white (haha) well taken care of etc. I doubt the guy is getting many calls on it. These rigs are not desirable to the public. A dealership would not give him squat for it. Offer him 9k and stick to your guns. Even at this price it’s still on the high side. Let him know you are serious about the purchase but he must come down to close the deal. It’s an old car that is expensive to maintain, Head gasket done? (2500) Front-end service done in the last 60k? (950). You want the car but are not going to be ripped off. If he says no, then tell him no problem. Let him know he has 1 day to think it over. After that you will put an offer on another one you are looking at. You can always come back and give him the 10k. This thing will not sell in one day for 10k. I paid 13k for mine, same condition, miles etc (no lockers) 5 years ago. Post up the pictures when this guy caves and he will.

I offered the $9k and he said no deal. He told me that he also turned down $9700.

I have looked at several rigs this week around $6k and everyone either has trashed interior or needs repairs.

To me $10K seems high, but it is in great condition.

I know as soon as I pay $10k I will find one tomorrow in the same condition for $6-7k

Ahhh decisions, decisions!

Give him a couple of days. He let out how long ago he turned down the $9700? May be an indication about how long he's going to hold out for $10K. Sounds like the other party could still be in the picture only $300 shy of the asking price. Don't get too emotional.

You won't care what you paid for it a year from now if you have not had to fix anything major on it. And if you are going to pay his price get a mechanic to go through it first.

I paid $11,500 3 years ago for similar - the lockers. And 1 month later I had to service the radiator for a cool $600 at the dealer.

I call BS on the 9,700 offer. If I were standing in front of him and he say that I would flat out call him an idiot. “Someone was within 300 dollars of your price and you said no? You are either a moron or that is flat out BS. Which one?”

He offered a Toyota Dealer pre purchase inspection.

Here are a couple of pics....not the best!

I know......I'm sitting here with a stack of hundreds ($10K).....for the love of god, some one talk me out of it....or not!:crybaby:

FYI KBB value was at 8,600 for a private party sale in good condition. If anyone is trying to buy it and they have to finance it. I doubt the lender will even lend to 80% of that. Very few people have cash in hand to purchase a vehicle in these economic times.

My bank has a limit on the miles. Anything with over 125k, no deal. 100-125k they will only finance for 24mo. My bank would go $9800 for this 80.

I paid $10.5k in '05 for my '96, with 94k miles on it, if that's any indicator. Same specs as this one, but a year earlier, also in excellent shape with a loving previous owner, stack of service records, etc.

Haven't regretted a dime of it.

Try telling him you'll beat the ever-loving crap out of it in the dirt. The lady who sold me my Cruiser said she turned down another offer just to know it would get dirty and "see the sights" as she put it. Tell him you're going to use it for what it was meant to do...go places no other truck can go. Tell him to imagine his Cruiser deep in Baja, or Death Valley, running in ungodly temperatures, harsh conditions, filled with gear, your lifeline to a safe return. Tell him this vehicle will have a very special place in your life, that you will enjoy it and love it far more than the next shlemiel, who will just treat it like some disposable piece of junk. If that doesn't sway him a couple hundred, he's a heartless creep. You have my permission to kick his ass and take the Cruiser.

On the other hand, if your heart really wants THIS truck, don't let us talk you out of it 'just because'. If you're going to be happy - go for it. Don't have regrets later because we talked you out of it. Do what you are comfortable with my friend.
