5th is added on in the split case, long way away from the main cluster, little cog too at that compared to the main cluster. Weak link for sure. So if you do plan heavy towing, be prepared to go a bit slower.

Look up 'never tow in overdrive', or similar or the numerous posts on mud about towing with the h55f. It is not really a towing gear box. Good business for gear box mechanics though.

Is it a lubrication issue? 5th is fine for long days on the highway, right? Got some trips planned. Should you vary speed and downshift periodically?
I drove 5200mi in 5th gear (when able)with no apparent issues
