The new engine is running great and I just finished it's first oil change. But...

A couple days ago I was playing with the Dakota Digital HDX owners manual and noticed that this gauge cluster has an option to hook up a diesel “Wait to Start” light. I thought, “how awesome would that be…”

So, I hopped in the truck, drove over to Stockton, and this thing followed me home.

Dibs on the 3FE! Shall I send you a pm or do you have other plans for it?

It will be going up for sale just as soon as I can stomach the idea of pulling a perfect engine that I just installed three months ago.

lol. I'm retarded.

I'm also upgrading to the late style -40 series doors. And they're getting central locking, keyless, and power windows (which has proven to be very difficult and costly).

Before I could get too far with the doors, I had to modify my '73 tub to work with the late style door stays and concoct a rubber boot arrangement that would pass the wiring loom into the doors:

The driver's side door also needed a patch panel along the bottom. I hate body work.

What kit did you use for the power lock and windows?
Also how well does your ac setup work?

I had to fix a few areas where I failed to properly scuff cured epoxy primer between coats which led to spots where the Rock-It Liner was peeling due to expansion, contraction, and flexing of the tub.

Lesson learned. Yay.

Hows it going hope your having a great weekend. I'm curious how has your a.c. performed this summer. I,m really struggling with which unit to buy. The vintage air has the most documented installs and everyone seems happy with them, but yours looks like the cleanest installed buy far and i am leaning that direction. You did mention that you had to make it work for you. Was there alot of fab work or was it just that you weren't happy with the wiring? Also it seems like you buy the evaporator and then you pick out all the accessories. Is that correct? I like that, but it also worries me that i wont get everything i need purchased. I guess my main question is would you do it the same way again? Thank you for your time , i do appreciate it.

The decision to swap the 3FE for the 1HZ diesel necessarily prompted me to stop working on the A/C install. The in-cab part of the system is finished, but I decided to swap the motor before I mounted the condenser and had a shop plumb the lines. So, now the A/C install will have to wait until I get the diesel rebuilt and installed before I finish it up.

I have been very happy with the performance of the blower/evaporator unit. The ducts put out a lot of volume and the heat will be fantastic in the winter. The Old Air brackets were useless so I made my own and their wiring kit was also a little generic so I modified it to follow a more factory-like fused circuit. I've done a lot of research on this issue - Vintage Aire and Old Air don't seem to be all that enthusiastic about you using a compressor and condenser not sold by the kit maker, but as long as the compressor is not a variable-vane type and as long as the condenser is of an appropriate size, you should be fine. I really wanted to use a Toyota compressor and bracket and think it will work just fine.

The central locking kit came from A1Electric.com. I went with heavy duty locking cylinders which seem to work fine. The power window function is something I've not quite solved to my satisfaction just yet. I've spent over $600 on a couple different types of PW kits and each has either not worked in the limited space in the -40 doors or has not performed up to my expectations.

Lots of movement on this in the last few weeks...

It took me almost a year, but the 1HZ has been completely rebuilt. For those who are interested, you can see details of the process here: My 1HZ Turbo Diesel Build Thread

Here are a couple photo highlights from the rebuild:

Present state:
-The engine was gone through from top to bottom. I'd consider it essentially remanufactured at this point. It still needs the turbo, injection pump, and injectors rebuilt as funds will allow.

-The H55 and split case will be completely rebuilt. I got the transmission apart only to find that it needed more love than anticipated so I've ordered new gears, synchros, as well as synchro hub and sleeve for 3rd. Both those rebuilds will be forthcoming, but for the time being, I decided to bolt the empty transmission and transfer housing behind the engine since I'm focusing on mockup right now.

It took the better part of the day wrestling with this thing to get the position just right. Once I was happy, I tacked the front mounts in place and bolted the rear crossmember to the frame.

In this photo, you can see one of the minor side projects that was required to fit the 1HZ into the -40. I converted the steering to a FZJ80 box and made my own intermediate shaft from parts scavaged from an older Tundra and 4Runner.
