Hwy gearing on a pig?

Maybe something is a bit off, but I've got a Trollhole carb, pertronix ignition, and new plugs/wires. Seems to run pretty good, maybe a bit rich at times. Once it hits about 60-62, it seems to give out of power and loses against weight and wind resistance. I am hesitant to get it past 3k rpms though, just doesn't sound healthy and enjoying life past that.

Are you going off your speedo? My speedo is off after adding 33s. If I am remembering correctly, 3k on my tach = 72 MPH on the GPS

How you like Trollhole carb. How long you have it.

Had it installed about 2 years now. Seems to be fine. It was plug and play, allowed the removal of most of the vacuum lines, and it ran fine at first start up after swap.

My main issue with it is that I've reached out to marshall (trollhole) numerous times asking about rebuild parts, and get no answer. Phone, email, or here on Mud.

When i bought my pig i had to drive it 2 hours home. I dont know why i waited so long but half way through the drive i decided to check the speedo with my GPS app and the whole time i thought i was doing 70 mph it was actually well over 90 mph! I toned it down after that but never really felt scared, but I should have though. Not long after i bought it, the band-aided steering box turned to mush and was a handful at 30 mph. I figure just drive it like you stole it. The worst that can happen is you die driving the best vehicle ever.

Jim it's still in progress - the "while I'm at it" - issue is overwhelming sometimes. All those "someday" parts and ideas come out of the shed. Life and the :princess: haven't set the priority of finishing it as high as I had. But now shooting for sometime in June. Been using the 60 as my partial "fix" for fun driving. We really do need to try and set up a Pig Meet this summer.

What year, if any, did the pig go to hwy gearing? I know 1979 was the year for the FJ40. Thanks!

1979 was the year Toyota change from 4:11 to 3:73 in an attempt to improve fuel economy, but later reverted back to 4:11 with some of the FJ60 models.

Like most things in life, we all have our preferences and I personally disliked the 3:73 in my '79 pig so I swapped the 3rd members back to 4:11 and threw in a lunchbox locker while I was done there. My off-road performance with 33" mudder radials, a SBC 350 behind a TH400 transmission is most impressive. The trade off is a decrease in fuel economy - which means nothing to me as the pig is a not my primary ride.

There are variables for you to consider such as tire size - the bigger you go the less "crawl factor" or decreased low end torque, but better highway speeds at lower RPMs. Also, are you willing / able to perform the 3rd member swap? Not difficult, but can take some time.

I concur with the other poster about highway speeds - I just don't feel comfortable traveling at speeds greater than 65MPH - mine will easily do 70MPH + but definitely outside my comfort level for a 37 year old truck that's equipped little better than a tractor. Good Luck.
