What year, if any, did the pig go to hwy gearing? I know 1979 was the year for the FJ40. Thanks!

all 4.11:1...to swap in fj60 pumpkins, you will need to modify the driveshaft, or swap the pinion flange(being careful to not screw-up bearing preload)to something with the fj55s flange pattern(marlin multi-pattern flange...)the pig won't like short gears with big tires. 31s might be OK on the 3.70:1s from an fj60. Alternative is to go with 33 or 34" tires and stock gearing...rubber overdrive...

I vote smaller tires and shorter gears...but that's just cause I'm cheap and big meats are spendy; plus, I know how to drive...

H55 with 60 pumpkins, Discs and 60 PS, Confer LR Tank Makes for a nice Hwy truck. Oh yeah, for the :princess: add lots of Dyno Mat.

Stock 4.10 diffs, stock 4spd, 31s on slightly wider FJ60 wheels, Ranger overdrive, 2" lift via add-a-leafs. Does everything from the Kokopelli Trail to the interstates very well. It is a SBC but imagine the same combo would work with an F engine. Not a crawler and not a Hundy but not an overcomplicated build either.

I should quantify, I found that at 75-80MPH the hood started bobbing on the latch which was unsettling. The truck drove fine otherwise ;) The gearing was just wrong for my setup, but wanted to clarify that '79s did indeed come with 3:73 gears. For those thinking of going this way, they wheel like complete crap with the stock 2F/H42/3:73 setup ... it feels like you are going Mach 1 even in low range. Highway good, offroad suck .... go with a rubber overdrive here.

Another option is the Marks 4WD Transfer Case Gears that offer 44% low range with 8% high range over-drive, I still have the 4:10 gearing with 35” tires and have seen 90+ MPH when testing turbos and still pulls hard even with my limited RPM of the Cummins diesel engine, similar final ratio to 3:73’s in high. The 44% under drive in low coupled with the 4:10 gears still lets you crawl at a reasonable speed giving you the best of both worlds with one mod.

The kit is a bit on the expensive side but when you factor in all the parts it would take to duplicate the outcome it’s not too bad. I bought mine part# AA716921 from @cruiseroutfit

I'm man enough to admit that 75 and up isn't comfortable in an f series driven pig...you'd be a fool to not recognize the potential...

Anyone have a Ranger or Fairy lying around?

I have a stock 2F, fj60 diffs, Trollhole carb and 33x10.5 tires.

I've seen 60 mph, and she is screaming at me.

Vehicle weight, lack of aero, and the heavier tires, and that's all I can get from her.

You should be able to get more out of a 2F than 60 MPH if you are running 33s and 3.73...

Maybe something is a bit off, but I've got a Trollhole carb, pertronix ignition, and new plugs/wires. Seems to run pretty good, maybe a bit rich at times. Once it hits about 60-62, it seems to give out of power and loses against weight and wind resistance. I am hesitant to get it past 3k rpms though, just doesn't sound healthy and enjoying life past that.

75 isnt at all comfortable in a 6.0L LQ4 pig either. In fact. 65 isnt a whole lot of fun.

I just went to 5.29s to get my gearing back from the 39s.
