If you can remember the late 60’s early 70’s, you probably weren’t there.

I turned 10 the month this fj40 (which is now in the US) was built. I barely knew anything about rock & roll and nothing about sex or drugs. The Rolling Stones released Exile on Main St that same month. A friend gave me a copy of Jethro Tull’s Thick As A Brick for my birthday.

The other two subjects were still a couple years in the future.

Oh man....
That looks tight!

Well, I’m about to find out.

Flying to Maryland Thursday and starting back with ideally both the diesel-swapped (1hd-fte, 5-speed) lx450 and the 72 FJ40 (supercharged 1fz-fe, 5-speed).

Depends if I get help driving MD to Memphis.

If I do

Gonna drop the 40 at @FJ60Cam ‘s place and take the fat one to Tejas to renew the registration, then fly back Memphis and pick up the 40 and drive it the rest of the way to Colorado.

If not

Drive the 40 first to Mosely in Memphis then back to MD on a plane to drive the lx450 to Texas.

Cam will give it the once-over and dyno the truck, both for fun, and to tune it. It’s only been tuned with a “butt dyno” and a laptop, so, ya know, I’d like to know a number.

While I’m in Memphis I can visit the 5.2L stroker 1fz-fe Cam is building for me and maybe also the 4.4L 2F that goes in the 74 fj55 (🐖 content), and the other 105-series 1fz-fe that gets the same 108mm crank, +1.5mm valves, and stage 2 cams, but less compression, as it’s going to get a turbo and go in the 78 fj55 I bought from @TachedOutOffRoad and a hzj76 frame I have.

Once in Austin, the lx450 probably stays in Texas for now. Gotta get the dogs and wife in the Tacoma and drive them to Austin mid September (and sell the Taco if the other two pass my 2,400 mile (MD -> Memphis -> Austin -> Colorado) and 2,000 mile (MD -> Memphis -> Colorado) tests. It’s Summer, so maybe a good highway test.

While in Tejas I’ll get in touch with @samc2447 who should be back from SAS7 by then and go help move the 74 fj55 (Pua’a) to his shop in Houston. (More 🐖 content.)

I have Scheelmann seats ordered for both the 40 and lx450, but they won’t be in until late August. We’ll see how I feel at the end of this.

The lx450 is now an over 3 year project (April 2020), though I did have the truck from last December until March and put about 3,000 miles on it then.

There were issues, so I sent it back to MD, and of course while it was apart I couldn’t resist messing with it, so: cross-over delete, which brought in a hdj81 radiator, upgraded the turbo from gturbo’s red wheel to blue wheel, put a bigger tune on the unichip. Since the head came off, rebuilt it, went back with ARP head studs, and a bunch of other miscellaneous malarkey (full reseal, fixed the @Lutz Auto display, which you can see still not back in place in the video below), and addressed. some things I felt could be better, went to the @Delta VS 5L front LCAs, and a taller coil in the rear, along with the stouter Dobinson’s control arms for the rear axle, addressed some electrical and mechanical issues.

Frank accommodated it all, but, of course, it all takes time.

The 1972 fj40 has only been “mine” since Dec 2021, and was promised in 4 months, as it was mostly done, but then it snowballed from a 2F and 4-speed into a 1fz-fe from a 105, a NIB Katzuma supercharger, a haltech ECU because the coil on plug 1fz ECU goes into alarm if it sees 1psi at the MAF sensor, individual coils (supra) instead of the wasted spark OEM setup, a larger fuel pump, modifying the OEM tank to have a cup around the pump, a rebuilt h55f and split case from my hzj75 (which is now 1hd-fte/h151f), the factory-locked with discs (front and rear) axles also from the hzj75 (went to 5-lug to match the newer front end), (note: the troopy is still in UAE, so we had to ship them from Dubai to MD and then on to Colombia), fzj80 PS box, master cylinder and vacuum booster, Dakota Digital cluster, taking the ashtray and extra switches out of the dash, seats from a 74 fj40, in leather with headrests and seat heaters, Dobinson’s springs with the IMS shocks, vintage AC w/climate control, a little retrosound radio, a 70-series radiator, with aux fans in front of the condenser, new glass, replated fasteners and door hardware, new seals, full lizard skin sound and thermal spray-in insulation, cerikotaed exhaust and exhaust manifolds, getting a Toyota air cleaner to fit with the 1fz and supercharger, a fabricated front bumper (looks like OP Machine but isn’t), LED illuminated switches from @ToyotaMatt, tied into the dimmer, LED courtesy lighting controlled by fJ80 door switches, the locker indicators are LEDs in the glovebox, 3-point seat belts, etc, etc,

so it’s taken until now.

You know, typical stuff. Right?

Here’s a video of them both on the way back from a Toyotas and coffee event. Probably 75-80 mph.

I have been on several larger projects and in the areas they roam. There was always a BHS expert that had to clear the area before we could go in and do our work. And we would still have a bio monitor with us during the work. I was like the BHS whisperer, because a lot of biologists had never seen one in person till they worked with me.
