So been nearly a year since Honey Badger was bought and we’ve done enough to the truck now to start a thread. Up to now what has been done is pretty much what you’d expect but wanted a place to document all the work/time spent on this awesome vehicle.

What’s the back story? Basically a buddy and myself wanted to build up an expedition vehicle to take off road. His wife was understandably getting fed up with two fully grown kids (her husband and I) taking her Escape out into the back country blowing shocks, getting rocks wedged in engine bay, destroying oil pans etc etc. Neither of us really wanted to own our own “real” 4x4 – mileage, maintenance costs, repairs, etc etc…..

Anyway – researched a ton and all roads led to the world of the 80 series land cruisers. Test drove around 5 or so in the LA area and the minute we tested out what was to be Honey Badger we knew we had the right vehicle.

173K on the clock, no lockers, pretty much stock, interior leather driver cracked up and split but rest of the seats in okay shape. Exterior clearcoat on bonnet (hey- I’m from the UK!) is all screwed up – we’ll fix that eventually…..purchased for the grand total of 4500 in July 2014.

First things first – PM and baselining on the backburner while we do a 3 inch heavy ome lift…..we’ll regret the lack of baselining soon…..

Head up to Mammoth lakes in Nov 2014 for a ski weekend and HB decides to take a piss on the side of the road – luckily right as we pulled in to the grocery store…… limp back to the condo and perform a PHH replacement – a royal pain in the ass…especially in front of a condo in the Sierras at 30F…..maybe we should have baselined….

End up ordering new radiator and all heather hoses– finally get everything in and replaced Jan/Feb 2015 – heater valve was completely corroded.

Time for some deflaring action along with getting rid of the stock rack – no rust – thank you California weather!

Next up - Full platform Gamviti rack installed – HB in her element in Saline Valley (March 2015)

Prepping for another trip out to Death Valley and incontinence strikes again.

Turned out the head gasket had gone – luckily I got it before any overheating – shipped car off to YotaMasters (great guys btw) in Corona to get the job done (April 2015)– the while your in there list…..Headgasket, whole head rebuilt, injectors cleaned, etc etc ...
AAA membership has saved us a lot of money so far…

Next job –get the rest of the rear locker gear installed (June 2015), compressor mounted, electrics hooked up, compressor line installed – locks up like a champ!

New shoes prior to a San Quintin, Baja trip over 4th July – 35’s – got kinda freaked by the difference in breaking power – after driving around for a bit – but its ending up not too bad…..EBC pads and new OEM rotors ordered

Increased tire size and poor braking

New fan clutch installed – didn’t have any roar at startup before– HB runs a lot quieter now….. new belts installed today actually – one snapped on me last week.

Anyone needs/wants the old fan clutch its yours for the price of shipping!

Other plans…..white knuckle sliders on order…..picking up next week …….. there’s a clanging coming from the rear left brake –oddly it only seems to happen at certain angles…. its an emergency brake issue that the local mechanic is kind of responsible for when he tried to fix the e-brake - we’ve learned pretty fast that if anyone is going to learn on your LC then it really should be you!!

Suspension bushings ordered – need to place a steering bushing, order through to Beno as well……steering not as tight as we’d like…… long term plans…..rear swing out bumper, front bumper and winch, planning to Monstaliner off white color …. Interior new leathers at some point way in the future, then dual battery and light bars…so many parts and so little money!

All in all this thing has changed our lives forever…once you are an LC head you can never go back…

Thanks also to all the support on this thread…seriously amazing.

Welcome.
So, tell the story of how the name Honey Badger about.

Thanks - we were basically stoked at what even a stock LC could do offroad when we first got the thing. There is a youtube clip joking about the 'The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger' by Randall that's been doing the round for years and how that animal can do just about anything - pretty cool documentary on Netflix about them as well - they're mean smart little creatures......couldn't think of a better name!

Sliders on last night! White knuckle - drove up to John and Natalie's shop up in Apple Valley over the weekend - great to meet them both - definitely recommend them!..

Welcome to the fun! I have the same sliders. You made a good choice, mine have taken an ass whipping on the rocks and held up perfectly. I think the cat cage could support the entire weight of the vehicle. :)

New oem front rotors at 179k - actually replaced the pads only (on very old rotors) about 7k ago but after upgrading to 35's and the poorer braking mentioned in the post above we ended up replacing both rotors and pads at the same time....

Went with ebc green stuff 7000 front pads -anxious to see how this improves the braking power....

Repacked the wheel bearings and all that good stuff - steering feels tighter....?

I actually ordered the wrong pads for the front (ordered 2 sets of the rears by mistake) so ended up driving 20 or so miles on new rotors with the old pads (that only had 7k on them) see what they did to my new rotors....half shiny...half not....

New ebc front pads on tonight!

Yeah - they look a little 'worn in' here - I promise they were nice and shiny a few months back when the install happened...

Had a knock sensor circuit malfunction code p0325 show up a few weeks back - it was a wire that had completely separated from the knock sensor that was the culprit - hurrah - just need to replace the wire....sod it - I snapped off the end of the knock sensor trying to uncouple the plug from the damn thing!!

A free job to a >$140 job in the time it takes to say 'be patient man'!

And finally getting around to install the new front calipers and soft brake lines ordered from Beno a few months back - word to the wise...make sure you put your brake pads back the right way before a test drive....doh!

This truck is awesome!

Love the writing style. Thanks for documenting your adventure so far.

Thanks! I edited my original post before I saw your reply - felt a little bad for publicly shaming my engineer buddy for installing a brake pad back to front - and then we go on a test drive......I'm a scientist - trust me - scientist v engineers....it's a thing....

while I'm in the thread updating mood.....

A while back we were trying to get the steering tightened up - a little too much play for our liking. Figured it'd be nice to be able to turn the steering wheel knowing that the wheels would reliably follow suit! First things first - bunch of new bushings ordered from Beno - Ended up paying a shop far too much money to press in new panhard bushings, Frame side front control arm bushings and new sway bar bushings.

New OEM Tie rod and relay rod ends to go with new tie rod and drag link from Slee - all about 182K miles.

what made the most difference in 'tightening up' the steering was making sure the front wheel bearings were tight to spec......

Also - finally got around to installing the rear adjustable panhard from slee. On the last off road trip there was a huge 'clanging' coming from the back of the truck like something was really loose. Got under there and really tried to shake thing loose - nothing - everything seemed 'tight'. After installing the adjustable panhard to correct the axle shift following the OME lift - clunking has gone away.....go figure

Bushings are on my list, im thinking it might be cheaper to buy a HF press & DIY it. The shop rate is $100 per hour here.

How much did you correct or shift axles with new pan hard bars? I'm thinking at full compression the driver rear would now be further outboard than before. To much could get into fender per say. Mine was only out by .25" so I just put in a .25" pancake wheel spacer to line it back up.

Thanks for sharing your jurney...

If i remember correctly - the axle was shifted about 1/2 inch after the lift - but I could be wrong - it was definitely noticeable by eye when you stood behind the LC that the axle was shifted right. So just visually corrected for that with the adjustable panhard- when the rear swing out bumper goes this will have to get double checked......

How do you like the heavys? I like the build so far, thanks for posting it

Thanks!

When the lC is fully loaded with 4 days of camping supplies, dogs, kids, adults and enough beer to sink a battleship the ride quality is awesome.

Unloaded - its a stiff ride. Went with the heavies as there are plans for a rear swing out bumper - those plans were delayed after the HG blew.
