I was just quoted $1078.92 for five Cooper Discoverer S/T 255/85/16 tires mounted/balanced, including sales tax. That makes these tires $216 each... That seems way high to me for what they are. Am I right?

...Or is it just outdated/wishful thinking on my part that a decent 33" tire could be found for around $175ish mounted/balanced?

Now THAT'S more like it!!

Thanks TLCnoob!

Seems about right assuming 8% sales tax and $15 each to mount = $185 per tire.

Probably better deals to be had but I don't think that's out of line IMO.

Edit: the price listed at UnserTire.com - High Performance Tires is less than I could order the tire from my distributor. That is a great price.

Ashooter,

That is a tall skinny tire, are you unhappy witht he 265-75-16 you have on now or is this just due to needing replacements? I have the same size and kind of wish I had gone to the 285 series, especially since I am looking to gain about 2" when I replace the sagging springs.

No Glen, not unhappy with the Revos I have on there now. However, when I swapped my old factory springs to a set of OME 861/862's, the tires shrunk! Kinda funny that it doesn't really look like it got a lift - measures about 1" of actual lift - but those 265's now look really small. They would probably look downright ridiculous if I'd have done the OME 2.5" lift.

Anyway, I figure these Revos will last another 6 months or so and I was just scheming about what to replace them with.

I will NOT go with 285's. Tried that for about a week and ended up selling them to a friend and buying the 265's. Those 285's really made this truck feel sluggish, but the 265's feel fine. I'm hoping the 255's will feel about like the 265's, but still give me that little extra clearance... not to mention better appearance. ;)

I bought 5 discoverer STT in 285/75/16 for $1165, mounted/balanced/replacement certificates, from America's Tire, about 1.5 years ago. Was the best tire from a local tire shop. If you buy online remember to factor in shipping, and mounting and balancing. That could easily run $175, and depending on the company, they may have to charge you your state sales tax.

Geez, tiny shreddable tires are expensive these days.

I have those same tires on my Tacoma DBL cab, 3" lift, and here in MO they cost me about $850 mount & balance for 4.

My last set of these tires (5) lasted 73K and i have retained them for trailer tires and a fullsize spare - alway rotated every 6K!

Love em! Good luck

Yeah, but I'm not talking about buying TRACTOR tires like some of you guys drive around on. Just little old 33's.

I bought mine at onlinetires.com

https://www.onlinetires.com/default.aspx?PageData=checkout1 $670 for 5 tires

great tire and size.

I'm gonna look seriously at 255s also next time around... I like the skinny concept. Main thing that gives me pause is sand running....

Is there anything out there that is a 265ish width in a 33" tire?

Just curious.

Do some math, the 255/85's are going to be slightly taller than 285's. It will make your truck feel sluggish just like the 285's did.

Great size, and a bit narrower than 285's, but it's not the width that kills power. Get 'em.

Actually width is a contributing factor in getting power to the ground, especially if you consider the weight of the tire.

Narrower tires lighten up your steering feel also. But yeah, 255s are pretty tall. Won't do much to improve your overall gearing.

everything else the same, I would think a narrower tire has a smaller rolling resistance. Not that that would necessarily make a huge difference in perceived sluggishness, but I would think you would see it as better mpg.

All I'm 100% certain about is that the 265 Revos accelerate, decelerate, and steer noticeably better than the 285 Revos did. I don't know if it was the weight, the frontal area, or the diameter that made the difference, but 255's will reduce 2 of those variables and still give me a 33" tire.

They will NOT, however, turn my 3FE into a V8. I can live with that.
