While everything was out I noticed the battery tray frame was cracked so out she came to be welded.
Sandblasted and ready for paint.

Since I had the battery tray out and good access to the injector pump I decided to replace the diaphragm in the back.
There was a lot of oil so did it as a maintenance item. The diaphragm can crack and leak causing problems with RPM's.
You can see how much oil and crud had built up and had been leaking for some time.

Cleaned up the rear housing and found the diaphragm was still in good condition with no tears and still quite flexible.
Here is the part number of the diaphragm, old and new diaphragm at the top.

The rear housing had three shims and spring, all clean and ready to assemble.
The hardest part was removing the split pin which attaches the diaphragm in the rear of the pump and making sure not to drop that or the washer into the pump.

Also got a late model cab in great condition that I can use all my LX parts on👍

You don't know how lucky you are. Would love a 83/84 cab to convert to LHD for my FJ45 to a late model. 67 was the end out pickup/ute and four door LV. I take this was a HJ47 because it doesn't have the emission tank in the back like the 45 petrol.

My brother had a huge win when he found and bought all these cruisers. All but one were diesel so the previous owner knew what he wanted.
The tub has the later transmission cover to suit the 5 speed which i think makes it a 83-84. It does have the section behind the driver for the fuel tank breathers etc.
My LX is 82, which has seen better days but has power steering and the awesome triple wiper set up.

Been a wet few days here so more shed time👍
Since the Ute had a cracked windscreen and I had a good one in my LX frame I decided to change out the screen. Was a bit nervous pulling out the good screen as I have cracked an old windscreen before when removing it.
All went sweet

As you can see the LX frame needs some rust repaired.
Screen out, spent some time cleaning all the old sealer mastik from the rubber .

With the screen out. Love how good the body is for rust. Cleaned and rust treated any exposed metal

New screen fitted and polished, very happy.
Followed this for the install, worked great.

Meanwhile my brother and l we’re going over his HJ47 Ute to get it ready to sell.
Changed all oils, check fuel in tank, drained sediment filter and cleaned out, changed fuel filters. Check brakes, steering and front end. Straightened out some panels and side steps.
Took it for a run down the road, was driving great til we blew a tyre😂
This one was nick named ‘Blue Stripe’

After the Blue Stripe ute was sold my brother bought the next ute over. This was a HJ47 ’81 model with a patina look, it has some rust in the floor but nothing major. Blue stripe was definitely a cleaner ute.
Same procedure a good check over service and change all oils. Took a bit to get running but found the fuel lines to the sedimenter were perished and sucking air. After that was fixed it was running sweet. It will need clutch master and slave like all the others. The brakes will need going over and a few other things.
Brother is still deciding whether to fit a disc front end to it as this model still has the drum front end. Disc front end is a great upgrade for the brakes but it’s his call.

Would like to clean the body up and preserve the patina look of this one. Cleaned a small section on the front quarter to see how it will look.

Decided to get away for a few days with the wife and youngest son. Headed north for a few days of camping. Here’s my 80 series with the camper trailer in tow.

Another side project I have going is a turbo set up for the 1FZ, front mount intercooler and bonnet scoop already fitted.
Spotted this troopy in the camp ground.

After a few days of camping and relaxing l was back home and onto the HJ.
After ordering the wrong offset fan I got the right one.
5C3B1DB9-9E32-440D-B676-27CFDAE53816.jpeg

Reassembled the fan, radiator and mount after a few welding repairs and front clip. Also put some padding on the grill to stop it rattling. You can see the two tabs with holes on the lower section near the wiring harness. Not sure what’s there from factory to stop the rattling?

Gave the coolant and washer bottles a good clean up, stripped and cleaned out the washer pump motor and got that working again😁

Really happy with the way these turned out. Did some from the LX while I was going.
Heres the directions i followed but used a white paint pen and a light sand when dry using 1200 grit, then some Armor All to blacken them back up

What year was the Ute your brother sold? I know Australia didn't get disc brakes until the 83 model 10/82. Also the time the hump changed to accommodate the H55F.

Really think you need to rename the thread. Something like HJ47 and rubbing it in. For someone who has been a 40 series addict as long as I can remember you Aussies really make me jealous.

The blue stripe ute is a late 84 model with taco, same as mine. The Patina ute is an 81 with drum front but he also has a late disc 40 front end that will need an overhaul before we fit it. As much as I love early cruisers these late models are very nice. I couldn’t believe it when he found them and started sending me pictures of them all. I feel pretty lucky to have the HJ47 I got😁
Australia has a lot of diesels compared to the US, and got none of the later model utes
My brother has also bought and sold a few more HJ45 which needed a bit more work.
Here’s a HJ45 79 model he picked up the other day

Ute/pickup ended with the 67 model here. Never any trayback models. Fewer diesels, what diesels? None were ever imported to the US.

Love those old early 60's model utes you guys got, that's the next model l would really like.
Didn't realise you got none of the diesels, suppose fuel is cheap in the US. I see a lot of your 60 series are all automatics as well.
My 80 series is a 1FZ manual 5 speed which is not common over there either.
Nice to know about the transmission hump as my bare cab needs one and they are a different shape to the one i have.
Thought about changing the name of the thread to HJ47 Farm Ute

After the 87 model FJ60 (yes we got the FJ60 two more years after most got a 3F with a carburetor we got the 2F with a carburator for two more model years. 88 model was a 3FE with a A440F automatic transmission. 87 was the last of our manual transmissions. Those H42s. No H41 or H55F were imported. While Australia had a rear FF starting in 75 those were never available in the 40 or 60 series. No need to mention the 70 series because that series never made it here. Our 80 series did have a rear FF and the E-locker as a option. Once the 100 series started front independent suspension was the only available option. Rear locker lasted 98/99 then went to electronic traction control. Might give you an idea why Americans are jealous of you Australians.

low key want to move to Australia just for the trucks. Great wheeling tracks, cheap 4x4s, a ton of aftermarket, a ton of 4x4 culture

here its all just jeep wrangler mall crawlers and kids with 12 inch lifted Silverados
