Cleaned up the horn contacts and steering wheel and looked into the indicators not working.
Found the steering column bearing all gummed up and the bearing hold down bracket all bent up. Not sure what caused this.
Cleaned out all the old grease in the indicators which was gummed up, used some contact cleaner on the electrics then greased all moving parts. Good as new.
Cleaned up the steering column bearing and straightened the hold down bracket and reinstalled. Had to remove one security screw holding the ignition mount on.

Wired and mounted my old alpine head unit from my 80 series. Only has a single 4” speaker mounted beside the glove box. Replaced the original speaker as it was stuffed with a spare one I had. May do an overhead console in the future with the speakers mounted in that.

Also ordered some door rubbers, window channels and cowl drain hoses for my 71 from Cityracer. Door rubbers look like a quality product, yet to fit them up.
The drain hoses I ordered were for a LHD model which I missed when ordering😔
For some reason the drain hoses for the cowl vents on the early cruisers are different for RHD versions. Hopefully a cut and shut will make these usable. Great to see these parts are still being produced, this was always a worry when I bought the 71 FJ40 all those years ago.
Comparison of the original door channel rubbers to new

In all the new parts were 2 new seals for the steering box which would leak oil just sitting in the shed.
So removed the steering box and gave it a going over.
As removed

After a good clean up, that crap was caked on.

All stripped down. Notice the pitting on the main shaft, this cleaned up after some vigorous linishing with some emery tape.

Here are the seal part numbers for those who need them

Had to make a new gasket for one cover, the other cover for the input shaft has shims which I used some gasket sealer on.

Steering box all assembled. Still have to adjust the box once it’s installed but did a quick adjustment on the bench first.
Excuse the messy bench it is over due for a clean up.

While the box was out I decided to put a bearing in the lower end of the column which I put off the other day.
After stripping the column down again I found that the lower column mount brackets were all bent which was consistent with the upper bearing bracket.
So after some panel beating it is good as new. Then I realised the bearing wouldn’t work as I have a later column with the steering lock and it wouldn’t slide on😔
So decided to use an old shackle bush that I linished down to fit the column. I cut a slot down the bush so it could be fitted over the shaft and trimmed the flanged end and it fits perfect. The original is a bush still available from Toyota but most likely a 4-6 week wait.

Column now feels solid and this should stop the shaft contacting the lower cover.
Shout out to Lost Marbles for the mod😁

My new fan resistors arrived so fitted that up. Had to make a new mount as the new resistor is longer than original. It was cheaper to buy 4 then the 3 I needed for my projects, good to have spares right.

Been spending a lot of time on Olive trying to get the painting finished so i can get it all back together for Xmas but slowly running out of time.
Mean while i have been fixing tail lights and wiring on HJ47. Also rust proofing inside the doors, lubricating the window mechanisms. Welded a waher to the back of passengers winder to take out the slop and wear on the winder. Made new door plastic seals and cleaned up the door trims until l decide which ones to buy new?
The passengers door trim was rotten and buckled from water damage so l decided to make a new card and transfer the trim across, not sure how this will work out but l have nothing to loose but time.

Then after l assembled the door l checked the locks and found that it wasn’t locking.
So strip off the card and find the linkage come off for the lock and a broken clip. Found a replacement in my spare parts and like new again.

I removed the upper guard to make it easy to cut the hole with the hole saw. I hate holesaws cutting metal, these things are the devils tools. I cleaned up under the guard edges and treated with rust converter and rust proofing.
