G'day guys.

New to the forum.

I've recently purchased a 1979 HJ45 Troop Carrier and I'm keen to put power steering in it. Does anyone know where to find a kit/what I can use from another car/How I can do it?

Thanks!

You should be looking for a stock Toyota HJ PS setup mate. I do not know of any other units that will work with the diesel pulley setup.

There is no stock power steering setup for either an HJ45 or an HJ47.. they never came out.

The best conversion path, if you live in Australia where parts are plentiful, is the 60 series conversion.. but honestly, power steering is overrated.

City Racer LLC sells the electric power steering set up that I have in my BJ45, his ad shows RHD also. Little pricy but we love it, I'm putting same set up in our 77 fj40 project.

When I was building my version of an HJ45 I was told this a few times and yet I found am using a PS setup from an HJ 45/47 2H. It is not from a 60 series. I had one of those and would not work. BTW my parts came from AUS.

You probably had something that had been grafted onto a HJ45 or 47 from something else.

Yep.. its an early 60 series power steering pump mount. Bottom radiator hose will foul when fitted to a standard HJ45 or HJ47.. with modification it can work but it requires the bottom radiator outlet to be modified - its not an ideal outcome for the radiator.

I know this is a rehash on an old thread. I’m looking in to purchasing a 76 hj45 with an H engine. Has anyone been successful with this engine and a pump?
