Soaked wood?

FYI, I checked out the Egg at Sam's today and it is the real deal with rack for $870

That said, for the same price I would do the KJ for these reasons

Double cook rack
Indirect plate included
Non flimsey cradle

No I am just going to cut Hickory into the pieces that will work for me. I have been introducing more wood as I cook these days and I like the smell.

Not to geek out but his book is good. It explains the wood and his ideas on making smokers. It all starts with the best meat that you can get your hands on.

When the marina opens up down from us I am going to ask if I can bring in a brisket for him to try out there. I would love to open up a little shack and sell some. Got to get this house paid for first.

What do you guys know about Primo "grills" (Kamodos or whatever)? I have a chance to barter some legal services with a guy who is a dealer. They only carry primo (not KJ or BGE). Sadly, I'm Kamodo-less and so I'm inclined to make the trade unless you guys tell me they are horrible and I'd be better off taking the cash or going to Sams.

The oval shape is good especially for ribs or briskets. I rarely cook anything that is round. The selling point for me is they are made in the USA and they have a very active forum that has lots of great tips. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ceramic options. If you can get a good deal on a Primo that would be enough incentive for me to lean that way.

Now you are catching on!

Hickory is good but pecan is the bomb!
I've had great luck with kingsford competition coals. Costco has them and I stocked up on 36lb bags for $17

The place I got the KJ carried Primo and KJ. I was debating between the KJ @ $899 or the Primo at $749 (I think). Both were the same size and shape (round). Both had about the same amount of equipment. The KJ seemed to be higher construction overall, and had an easy to empty ash drawer.

The Primo will cook just fine, though, and totally worth a trade for some legal services. Functionally, they are pretty much the same.

Dealer's cost is probably only about 15 minutes of legal counsel, right? No brainer.
