broke what looks to be my ring gear. was wheeling in st george on thanksgiving day when this happened. was climbing a steep slick hill with 5 passengers. was bouncing hard.

the sucky part is that i cant rememeber what d70 it is. i never posted it in my build. it wasn't an hd. i need to get it fixed by next month for the KOH.

tossed in a pic of the hummer from a recent snow run. the hummer is cool and fun to wheel but it aint no 80 on tons

That's better. Yeah that's how I broke mine. But I had no passengers.

Axle should have a BOM number for ID. Plug it in here:

Dana Holding Corporation - The Expert Axle Bill of Material

also can search by yr/make model

thanks man i tried to google that for a while last night. i called Marlin crawler today to see if they would do my gears. they will let me know tom if they want to do a dana 70.

its such a hassel to drag my whole truck to a shop to get the gears fixed. at times like these i would just love to have one of those sixty9 3rd members in the makes on Pirate.

if i could do my rear axle over again i would have gone with a low pinion 35spline 9" with a spool in the rear.

Wrench
thanks for flipping my hummer

I hope Jason is on the right track now. Having dealt with smaller fab shops for far simpler projects and getting similar results I empathize with him! But its a nice looking design and surely solid potential for him once he gets it to market.

Does your d70 have bearings on both ends of the pinion like a ford 9 inch?

if it did it would be called a 14 bolt and it probably wouldn't have broke

That's the ones I get confused with. the D70 & 14 bolt . So it's the 14 bolt that has the bearngs on both ends, got it.

Next step is a set of rockwells for ya, Dusty

That's been my rule, once I start breaking ring & pinions I look for something stronger.

That sixty9 3rd member looks interesting, but looks like it still is in The works. Looks like it needs a Ruff Stuff axle housing to go with it.

i have been looking at rockwells. now that i have a buggy in the works, and the lexus is trailered anyway it would be nice to have a super yota monster to tackle the snow with-something with 47's or even 54's. i would need lower gears to make it work. More torque would be nice too. Boots truck would be the perfect platform....

Did you start a thread for your buggy?

Don't see many LXs rolling on 42s ,really dont see any on 47s or 54s. True arctic truck there!

I dont think I've seen "boots" truck...

I've got the family haulin thread going.

I thought dusty was talkin about you having an 80 ready for some 47s.

So boots+80 didn't compute..

Nice 60 btw!

Mike this could be you

"classified, do not show this to anyone"

The internet is such a good place to hide stuff like that :)

I have not read all 37 pages, but what about using portal axles?

the larger unimog axles would work for real big rubber. rockwells are cheap and simple. by the time you get to 44" + tires, the clearance gained by the portals is of little significance
