Wow, you really need to get better photos up because I could not understand this whole thread until SnakeEater posted up WildYoats photos. Now I get it and definitely a cool idea and no reason a Drawtite Hitch would't work with it for those who tow serious loads!
Maybe this will help. Yes the Draw tight hitch will work with the bumper wings. We test fit a 38" TSL on a steel rim on the carrier and got no flex and it didn't block the taillight. Then I stood on the arm in addition to the tire with very minimal flex while the carrier was in the full open position total weight about 400 lbs. These are stout and I have no doubt that they will hold up. I'll get more pics soon showing the testing as well as with a tire mounted and the other side swing out. Ran out of time today to get it all done.

Got a pic with the tire mounted as well.

I'm loving this thing! I'm really amazed by the fact the my view out the rear window isn't completely obscured. I could still see the passenger of a 90's camry behind me at a stop light. Some of that will change when I have a 37" spare and I'm lifted, but this thing is great. I'm excited for the passenger side accessory bar to be completed too!

:steer:

BTW- sorry my truck is so dirty. I'll wash it one of these days...

This is a great idea, and lets keep encouraging vendors to deliver new products. Ebag- I'm afraid that I can't rationalize spending all that time running around assembling a kit bumper for the supposed price difference, so I guess I am a potential customer for the Hefty. I bet the vast majority of members don't have a welder, the skills to use one, or the space to do a big project.

PM sent!

More pictures please

I like them too.

Can you post some pics of what the jerry can holders and the ladder look like? Also what a pair look like without the hoops and the rear mud flaps intact for those wanting to maintain the stock look.

Would you consider extending the section over the rear bumper to more closely resemble how the alluminum plate approaches the tailgate. One of my biggest diappointments with most bumpers is how this are is left to look unfinished. ARB is the only one who does a good job this far.

I will post up pics when they are built. As far as one without the side hoops and with factory flaps and fender flares I can when someone orders a set and takes pics. Since I don't own an 80 I am stuck waiting on other peoples vehicles for pics. Sorry

Under the tailgate?
.....

The bumpers are built to be beat on, abused, bashed on rocks and come away doing their job every time. The 80 series is a very capable vehicle and we set out to provide products to compliment and strengthen what it already has built into it. Our business focus has been on building quality product for fullsize trucks and SUV's. We don't build products for Jeeps. I wouldn't expect a Jeep bumper to be sufficient for a full size rig or a FZJ 80. I can honestly state that these bumpers will hold up to the abuse you put it through.

I am sold on the strength of the wing, no question there. Can those 4 mounting bolts handle the same abuse that this wing gets? Are those 4 bolts the weak link?

Yeah the 4 bolts would be the weak point but they will hold up to beating on the bumper. All hardware is included and all hardware is grade 8 for maximum strength. Part of the strength is that it is bolted on three different planes. Basically it would require a tremendous hit to sheer 4 bolts that all are mounted in different directions.

yes..under the tailgate

under the tailgate...the factory wings curl up a little bit like the aluminum plate between the two.

Well, I took a bunch more pictures, but now I can't find my camera cable!!! As soon as I find it I will post the pics.

I also think the price is too high. $725 for the bare metal? I know of a couple other fabricators that sell complete basic rear bumpers including powder coating in the $800-$900 range. At that price you are getting a whole bumper. Not just wings.

It's a neat idea and I'm going to be in the market for a rear bumper in the near future but I wouldn't be interested in paying $725 + whatever for powdercoating when I could have a complete rear bumper for about the same price.

What is it about the wings that make it (in your opinion) so significantly different than a full bumper that caps the entire crossmember? I'm asking because I really want to know, not trying be an A$$.

I originally wanted a full bumper too, but after seeing these, running them and feeling how stout they are, the extra steel in the middle would have just been more material and more weight. Not to mention shipping cost. Unfinished, and in wing form, these will ship significantly cheaper as they won't have to be shipped freight...

I personally haven't seen any full bumpers for the LC that are priced in the range you mention. (:crossing fingers: please don't bring up 4x4Labs again...)

Again, IMO they're great and an excellent alternative to a "full," pre-assembled bumper in price.

I paid about that for an entire IPOR bumper - and it is as solid as you can get. No comparison, in my opinion. Whatever floats someone's boat though. Hopefully these satisfy a need in the marketplace. For half the money, I think they'd be a reasonable solution for lots of people. I agree with others - at that price, you might as well go with a full bumper. I'm not an engineer, but I have to imagine 1/4" steel all the way across bent around and bolted to the factory cross member is a little stronger than the handfull of bolts holding those winglets to the cross member. They make nice levers though. :-)
