Good to see you again Andy and thanks again for you and JP and Alex working on scouting the trip and planning it all out. I'd say it was a great success and we may need room for more vehicles next time! :D

Here's another of the bobcat for you guys, I wasn't expecting his jump so I blew the shutter speed:

Hey - Good to see you again too Tad. Nice to meet your wife as well. Tough girl - mine backed out when they saw the chilly / windy weather forecast!!

Damn, I hate I missed the bobcat sighting. Where did you see it? It is rare to see one, especially in the daytime.

Awesome to see the swampered LX470 out there! 3 100's on one trip - that's cool!!

Awesome pics, too. Thanks for sharing.

Yea i know that's what my school mascot was, but still the only catamount i ever saw was the statue on campus. I was going to ask if you guys stopped to look at the old apple trees that were shredded from bear claws, but i remembered you didn't go that route.

Saw it where we camped on day 2. It came up the trail from the chimney and crossed the stream about 100 feet up from the camp.

Figured you knew your mascot... ;)

We actually did go that route - accidentally and backwards...

We turned left on the gravel road (where we turned a sharp right last time and saw the girl in the pickup doing research). We went in and to the left and the trail and did a really cool ride that dumped us out very near the old apple orchard. The tie in trail we came down near the apple orchard has one fork that we should go back and explore. We could go in like last time past the house off the grid and up the tie in trail - it would be damn near impassable in a heavy rain though and no easy task in dry conditions...

That's so cool. Sometime after we took off to wheel I am guessing. Did he ever see you guys??

Did Alex have any luck fishing?

hahahaha, isn't that always how fisherman do it?!!

Andy, sounds like we need to try it then if it's damn near impassable! ;)

Actually i was thinking of one of two routes for the next "warm weather" trip. Either go the same route we went in the scouting trip except when we come out to the road, hang a left which takes up to bear lake. There is a really cool place to swim and cliff dive up there.

or,

do the route we did in the scouting trip backwards, so we start at the bald we came to on Sunday during the scouting trip, camp either there or where we camped in the woods near the creek, then ride the trail backwards. I think if we do it that way, the trail would be much more challenging (for example the steep hill descent we came down, we could try to go up that and also coming down from the bald the first day on the wet rutted trail, that would be fun to go up).

awesome trip guys and gals. glad everyone had fun.

Yes, 3 total but I missed the pic of the 3rd trying to get my camera out of my pocket before I hoisted him up. He was a rainbow about 9 inches.

I have to say that you, JP and Alex did an incredible job putting this thing together.

Job well done!!!

Good deal. Glad it was a successful outing and everyone had a good time. Alex deserves most of the credit - JP and I just showed up, tagged along and took notes while he showed us one of his favorite places to wheel. Thanks for teaching the club a new place CJ!!

Awesome that you caught some fish, man. Sitting there Sat morning and talking fishing was killing me because I forgot my gear. Not next time!!

I can't wait to go back!!

No, no, Andy and JP deserve all the credit. I just let them tag along and pointed them to a few trails.

I also can't wait to return, just when it's warmer. Camping on the bald in the summer is very pleasant, as you sleep the temp drops and the breeze blows through keeping you very comfy. And during the day, you can stop at the creek crossing and sit in the river a while to cool down. It is a little tougher keeping the beverages cool though, so they have to be consumed at a much more rapid pace. :)

I have definitely made a note of this! :D

Trout fishing in NC in March? Better be glad you didn't get caught by a game warden. March is out of season for trout. Even if you're just catch-n-release.

not wild trout waters, they are open year round.......... the signs along the stream stated they had no closed season.

I believe it is stocked rivers and streams that are closed in march

JP is right. The only closed waters in NC during March are Hatchery Supported. Catch and Release along with all other designations are open year round. Harvest limits may apply but fishing is permitted.

You can review the regs here:
http://www.wildlife.state.nc.us/pg02_Regs/pg2b4_signs.htm

The only thing illegal from my knowlege this time of year is Hatchey Supported rivers which are not even close to that area.

Straight off there site.

Catch and Release, Artificial Flies Only Waters
You must release fish once caught and you can only use artificial flies in doing so. Here is a breakdown of the Catch and Release, Artificial Flies regulations:

Season is open year-round
No fish may be harvested or possessed
Only artificial flies having one single hook may be used
It is unlawful to possess natural bait on your person while fishing
It is unlawful to use more than one line per person
It is unlawful to fish from one-half hour after sunset, to one-half hour before sunrise on any Catch and Release stream located on Game Lands
It is unlawful to take fish bait or bait fish from "Catch and Release Waters"
It is unlawful to move wild fish from one stream to another on game lands without prior written authorization from the NCWRC

Delayed Harvest Waters
These are stocked trout waters open to fishing year-round, but trout caught between October 1 and the first Saturday in June must be immediately released. You cannot keep or have in your possession any trout while fishing these waters during this time. Single-hook, artificial lures or flies are required during the October-June period. Beginning the first Saturday in June, harvest of trout from these waters is allowed, and anglers can use natural bait. "Hatchery Supported" trout regulations apply during this time. Beginning October 1, these waters revert back to "Delayed Harvest" trout regulations. Harvest of trout is again prohibited and anglers must use single hook artificial lures or flies. Here is a breakdown of the Delayed Harvest Regulations:

From October 1, 2005 to June 2, 2006:

You may only use single hook artificial lures
No fish may be harvested or possessed
No fishing allowed at all between 1/2 hour after sunset on June 2, 2005 and 6:00 am on June 3, 2006

The stream is now under the "Hatchery Supported" regulations
No bait restrictions
No minimum length limit
Seven (7) trout per day creel limit.

Hatchery Supported Waters
These waters make up over half of all trout waters in North Carolina. They cover approximately 1,100 miles of streams. Most of these streams receive at least one stocking per year of catchable size fish. Here is a breakdown of the Hatchery Supported Regulations:

Season is open from July 1, 2005 thru February 28, 2006
Then from 6:00 am April 1, 2006 to June 30, 2006

It is unlawful to place hatchery-reared fish into a wild trout stream or move wild fish from one stream to another on game lands without prior written authorization from the NCWRC

Damn I'm slow.

The club does not do anything illegal. I'm pretty sure it's in our rules. I'm also pretty sure Alex has being trout fishing longer than I have been alive.
