So I'm getting to the part of my build to where I'm thinking ahead. What are you guys using for headliner insulation? Factory, FatMat sound deaden, etc. Post pics with comments and suggestions. Looking for something to make the interior quit and cool. Thanks guys....

Ryan

The roof panels are poorly deadened from the factory... You will benefit from a mass loader. Under that you don't want anything too heavy to cause the headliner to sag... The factory uses jute. I think that jute is effective and a good choice.

You can also try spray on products that have insulative and deadening properties... Pick your poison (ie. Lizard skin)

Fwiw the windows will be the limiting factor in terms of insulation and noise... Most car audio gurus will advise only applying treatment up to the windows unless you need to deaden the roof panels because of a high spl subwoofer.

100% true here. I just did my '60 with a full treatment of sound deadener and it is quiet. I left the factory jute on the roof because there isn't much sound coming into the vehicle from overhead. Almost all of your ambient road noise is coming from the doors, wheel wells and tunnel.

Dynamat is not a sound decoupler, it stops panel resonance - that's it.

I used Mass Loaded Vinyl glued to 1/8" closed cell foam and have that velcroed to the doors, cargo areas and floors and it helped immensely with road noise.

Who makes headliners for the fj-60?

I was lucky enough to get my headliner out in one piece. Gonna get the local upholstery shop to make a new one with the color I want using the old one as a template. Thinking about doing it in black.

How were you able to fit the MLV on the doors....seemed like it would push the door panels out too far to snap in.

I used patches of Second Skin in between the roof braces. Checker boarding SS or Cruiser Crap or Dynamat is supposedly just as effective as complete coverage. Then I replaced the jute with 1" fiberglass from the local hardware store, glued up with 3M spray adhesive. That was all on top of spray on sound dampener.

Pics and details are in my build thread for Frankie.

SOR used to have homemade headliner material. I've never seen pictures of someone actually installing it. If your local shop makes a pattern, there might be other Mudders who would order one.

Hopefully this coming week I'll know more about price for new headliner. I'll see if he would be interested in making more to ship out.

Just checked on getting a headliner sewed up. $100 completely sewn and ready to be put in. Haven't had mine done yet and still deciding on weather or not to get the perforated kind or not. When I do decide, I'll get the sun visors done in the same material.

Oh wow! That's a great price if it's a nice one.

I would be in for one for that price, if they were willing to make a couple.

I've talked to him and he might be interested. Might be a little more with shipping.

I might be in if the quality is superb

Anybody use standard carpet jute on the roof? Seems heavier than the OEM jute.

Also would the foil backed jute with foil up against roof be any benefit?

You might have some business for your upholstery shop... Put in the order for yours and let us know on the quality and what not. If it comes out worth the $100 there are going to be more than a few of us that will want one.

dropped off the old one today and he said it would be done in a week or so. Also getting the sun visors done in the same material. When it gets done, I'll post up some pictures of it before it gets installed.
