Chamba, the pic of your old man pulling cable seems to show a good representation of a non-white bezel. It's distinctly darker than the white top. Interesting... Looks off white or a grayish like my FST 40.

Here are a couple of our 72 FJ40 from '73 and '74 respectively, followed by a black and white of the rig with me in front of it and the Tetons behind it to prove provenance. :D
That last one is one of my all time favorite landcruiser pics.

Chamba, is that Breath Green in those pictures? ThreeFJman, yours looks like Spring Green to me. Are we saying that before 1975 bezels and tops were Shell Ivory and not Cygnus?

Hey Josh,

You're a brave man to share those pics as a little tyke. I like the look on that black-n-white-- sorta Faulkner type, hard-scrabble kid out on the Plains crossing 'Merica comin' to California. And the one in the car looks like your dad installed a school-bus size steering wheel next to you. Oh.......should we mention the disco outfit in the other photo ? !

Wish I could find a photo of our old '53 Dodge sedan that my dad had the dealership remove the inside rear door handles to keep the four of us INside on the back seat whilst he was driving. And just to keep this thread relevant..... that old Dodge was painted the original Breath Green--by the Dodge Brothers--no Freeborn Red or Nordic Blue back then. Nobody seemed to care about rooftops or bezels--wasn't it Uncle Henry said you could buy any of his cars any color--as long as you liked black ! Simpler times.

I have a 1/71 build FJ40 that still has the original factory Spring Green paint and original light tan bezel and fiberglass top. I've had this FJ40 since 1972 when it was almost new. The top and bezel should match and they are definitely a light tan color since new.

Also, this topic has come up before. I can't search for it now but there is a thread with a picture of a new tan bezel still in the Toyota plastic bag.

After looking at vintage 40 pix here and online I guess I am under the impression that there were two bezel colors on import 40's. A bright white and an off-white. I'm leaving my bezel alone. I still plan on taking it off, cleaning a small area on the back and having it color shot with that light thingy that good auto body shops have.

On my first post I included a pic from my owners manual. It shows what appears to be a color matching bezel. It's not really in color so it's hard to tell, but it's not white. The manual is all English writings. So I would assume, or better yet draw to a conclusion that all white bezels is false. Any help from down under imports???

Hey green, did you check out my fist post pics? Mine is the same color as yours, it's original paint, but mine looks a bit gray. It is a FST so maybe with yours being a hard top the shot it different. Any pics of your with a tan cap and bezel??? I have never seen that, I would like to add it to my pic collection.

That's actually my father's friend Jim; my Dad took the picture. He and my Dad were in Vietnam together. Jim just retired from the USGS as one of the head geologists for the Rockies; that's how old that pic is.

Agreed, the Bezel does look darker than the one on my LX, which I know without doubt to be original. Hmmm.

I think it is called hunter green, but my memory is a but hazy.

Bear-not brave: posted in the name of Cruiser restoration which is a far nobler pursuit than avoiding personal embarrassment.

Picture of new bezel

Here is a picture of a new light tan bezel from another thread. I saved the picture several months back but I can't find the thread again. This bezel is the same color as the one in your first post. I called it light tan but maybe light beige is a better description. I don't know the actual name of this color but I think it's a different color than cygnus white.
Tanish FJ40 Bezel.webp

FJ40green,

That sure looks to be the color of mine. With our spring green 40's Having the same color bezels I'm certain that's a factory color. I get back into town late tonight so in the next couple days I plan on taking off my bezel and seeing if I can have a paint code made for it. Then I will share it with mudders and restorers. Thanks for the pic! I love the bezel still in the package.

That is the colour of the Bezel on our 72. The one on my LX is a shade lighter.

I am guessing that is the Shell Ivory that I have heard so much about.

Sorry. I haven't had time to go out to my aunt and uncle's farm yet.

FJ40 color codes

I have spent some quality time in this post this evening learning color codes, seeing some great pictures and reading good stories. I have been doing some research within the forum as well as searching images on the internet of FJ40's trying to figure out if there is a common color code of the vent window frame. No luck, I see them as black and body color. When I cleaned mine up (1970 non-USA here in Ecuador) underneath the poorly painted black is a very high quality and durable gray color which I will presume was original. Does anyone know whether or not there was a standard? What do most of you do when you re-paint? I will presume it is a decision you have to make since the doors are two piece and would need to be painted and then assembled. Thanks. Lenny.
