Hi folks,

New here, got an 80 series currently on a boat on its way over from Japan. It has K295 axles, which seems to mean 4 spider gear LSD at the rear, and an open diff at the front. My question is, is it possible to get lockers for these, as ARB only advertise them for locked and unlocked axles, and people I've asked don't seem to know which ones I need.

Thanks

I'll second that; call Kurt for a definitive answer. That said, I seem to recall that the LSD carrier is different from the other types so the aftermarket locker assemblies don't just drop in.

I have one sitting on my shelf for that very reason.
Thanks both. I've fired them an email, see what that comes back with. I guess if they're no good for it I'll need to get k294s? Fortunately they're relatively available in the UK.

Or a (whatever code that is - K292?) non-locked axle with aftermarket ARBs or Eatons. Might be both money and function ahead that way... Great time to regear too, if desired.

I can't even get unlocked ones in the UK haha, ours only came x3 locked. Aren't the unlocked ones weaker anyway?

Yeah that's why it's confusing me that there's an unlocked and locked ARB

Post a screen shot of the ARB catalogue page.
Pretty sure they'll just be listing options for factory locked or factory not-locked diffs.

And as mentioned above, the factory diff centre gets replaced with the ARB centre.
Factory LSD, locked, open, they all are interchangeable ( mostly)

Their catalogue only has one, must've been elsewhere I saw locked/unlocked. I've sent them a message. If that's the case then, are all full floating axles the same barring gearing? Can pick up petrol axles cheap over here, be useful as spares.

For 80 series, yes.

The factory locked rear diffs had a different axle for the short side. it has longer splines for the locking gear.
You could run it in a standard diff I guess. They are likely to be a bit rarer to find anyway.

I have the same axles on my JDM 80. My plan has always been to go with a locker that replaces the stock carrier. Looking forward to hearing what you find out

Forgot to check this thread for a bit but looks like its already been confirmed. ARB got back to me today and confirmed they're the same as open diffs. Is there a difference in strength between open and locked diffs? Id rather not put lockers in if the axles likely to pop!

Why do you want lockers?

In theory a locked diff centre is probably stronger than an open diff, but you'd probably break an axle before breaking either. If you drive like a bull at a gate, yes you're more likely to break an axle with a locker such as when you're under power and a wheel suddenly gets traction.

I was more meaning the strength of the pinions, shafts, etc on the factory locked vs factory unlocked. I want lockers so I don't have to drive like a bull through a gate to get through stuff.

Factory locked axle shafts have a longer splined section but other than that, no difference that I'm aware of.

The 80 has great axles, one of the chief reasons it’s so great offroad. Anything will break under abuse, a locker helps you control and minimize the abuse. Instead of excessive bump or speed you can just hit a switch and climb or crawl through.

A LSD is not a locker it’s an open diff with limited slip.
