I am finally starting the Build thread for my 1990 HDJ81 VX limited.

Here she is as purchased. The PO purchased this truck from Land Cruisers Direct owned it for less than a year and decided to sell it. I purchased it this march and drove it home to Denver from South Dakota, I got 17.5 mpg on the drive home!

LCD installed a OME 2.5 inch lift (medium springs and shocks), a ARB bumper, Safari Snorkel, and some Yokohama 285's. They also moved the factory winch to the ARB bumper, replaced the BEB's, and base-lined the belts and fluids. The truck was imported with just over 70K miles and it is sitting a little over 80k now.

When I got the truck it seemed suspiciously fast. I had read that these engine are dogs in their stock state, but this one seemed almost as "fast" as my 94 1FZ. The PO had a Auber instruments EGT gauge installed told me he keeps the temps under 1000f. Once I got the truck home I found that the EGT probe was installed after the turbo, so the readings were pretty much worthless. On day 2 of ownership I moved the EGT probe to the intake manifold and discovered that this thing was running over 1400f just going stoplight to stoplight. The safe ceiling for these engines is around 1250.

It was clear to me that the injection pump had been mucked with (likely by the Japanese owner) and it was dangerously over-fueled. After a ton of reading over on the Diesel/24 volt forum I jumped in. I summed up my experience with this post.

After I had the engine running safely (and slowly) again, I turned my attention to the 4x4 Labs dual swingout kit sitting in my garage. I don't have much for pics of that build, but here is the mostly finished product minus the jerry can holder.

As you can see in this pic, I also installed the Prinsu rack, tent and awning from my other 80.


The next item on the list was to tackle the starter. For those who don't know, cold weather spec HDJ's come with a complicated 24V starting system. It uses a 24v starter and a 24 converting relay which puts the dual batteries in series for starting. The rest of the electronics on board are 12v. This starting system while very effective for cold weather starts is a ticking time bomb for anyone who like to be in the back country. The first issue is that the 24 converter relay is prone to failure without warning. The next issue is that the batteries are connected in parallel permanently, so if one battery fails they both do. The last issue is that you need both batteries to start the car, and if your batteries do die on you it will take 2 batteries and 2 sets of jumper cables to jump you.

So obviously this had to go. I was able to piece together a 12v starter by using the rear section of a denso starter for a '92 dodge ram cummins mated to the front section of my OEM starter.

This seemed like a good time to get a proper dual battery setup as well, with one battery for starting and OEM electronics, and another "house" battery for my fridge and accessories. I used the slee diagram. Here is how I mounted the Marine switch and combiner solenoid.

With that time bomb defused I was finally able to move on to something a little more fun. After a decent amount of research I decided on the HPD series 2 front mount inter-cooler kit. Shipping from Australia was brutal but the kit is really nice and the install was super smooth.

With every thing bolted back on unfortunately I don't notice much of a difference in EGT's. I really don't think the inter-cooler is getting much air flow behind the winch. I might reinstall the stock boost tube for a little while and see if I can get some more scientific testing in.

That pretty much brings us to the present. I have done some other little mods here and there that I may make future posts about. Up next is to continue rewiring some of the things put on by previous owners, and add a more legit power block in the rear of the truck.

I'm surprised you aren't seeing lower egts. Have you done comparison runs up I-70? Was night and day for me.

What inter-cooler are you running and what bumper?

The last time I did the I-70 run it was dog slow, but I later found out that the hose fell off my boost controller so I was over-boosting way into fuel cut-off. I didn't realize what was going on at the time because my boost gauge was on the fritz (grumble grumble PO wiring). So I don't have a decent base-line comparison.

I did take it onto southbound I-25 after I got the cooler installed but before I put my bumper/grill back on. On the hill just before the Castle Pines exit I was able to hold 120 KPH at 1120f EGT's. That was about a 100 degree improvement but since putting the bumper on I seem to have lost most of that. It does idle much cooler and I only need about 30 secs of Turbo timer cool down to reach safe temps before shutdown.

Yesterday I ran Red-cone with a buddy in a 96 LX450. He is on 315's with 4.88 gears. We "raced" from a stop-light on hwy 285, I carefully kept my EGT's around 1250 and we were neck and neck by the time we reached the speed limit. I really can't complain if I am getting comparable power to his 1FZE (with him having a slight gearing advantage) while getting way better economy.

We caught fireworks in Idaho springs, and on the drive home in the cool night air I had amazing temps. I was able to hold 100 KMH in 4th gear up eastbound Floyd hill with EGT's around 1150. That was a huge improvement over any previous runs. All of my other drives post-intercooler install have been in the hot mid-day temps we've been seeing this last week.

I played with the pump for a few hours on Monday evening and got it dialed in really well. I cranked the main fuel screw until it started to raise the idle (with the idle screw backed all the way off), added a little more pre-load to the spring (I was getting a little cut-off in 4th) then I turned the aneroid to a more conservative profile until my temps were stable and safe. I am getting good power off the line (rolling a little coal) and it will only get over safe temps If I am flogging it in 3rd.

So now that I have the tune dialed in for the inter-cooler I kind of want to put the stock turbo tube back on and see what the temps are. It really wouldn't be much work.

I really need to get the Nomad valve body installed, that way I can just manually shift into 3rd for the mountain passes and put along at 80 kmh without worrying about cooking the trans.

I found myself crawling up the steep grades, especially after losing momentum because of slower traffic. Now I can keep 110kph up the passes and recover speed if I get slowed down.

Fueling is cranked up a bit and I'm up to 14 psi. It's pretty stock otherwise.

Sounds like we have identical builds, except my HPD is hidden behind a ARB bumper with the factory winch bolted to it.
 
Just FYI, I've killed my batteries a couple times on my HDJ81 with 24v starter. Boosted just fine with one set of cables to the drivers side battery.
 
Thanks for the tip on the starter! Im just about to start on that. Ive lost batteries once due to an alternator fault due to stupid user :hillbilly: I jumped the rig with one cable on the driver side also. Worked without issue.

When I first got the cruiser, I was driving it back from Vancouver BC to Atlanta. The i70 was a bitch and a half. It started raining like crazy and traffic slowed down. I could not pick up speeds without my ego climbing too high. I wound up crawling up that thing at 30 mph with the big rigs. Turns out my issue was overfilling doe to a power rod mod as well as not enough boost. Upped the boost and it alleviated the situation considerably. Next week I have a custom intercooler coming so hopefully my issues will be gone.

3/8ths aluminum plate, with countersunk bolts for the Awning. No need for the taper, version 2.0 would be square.
 
The other two holes are lined up with the slots in the rack?

Yeah, I can give you some dimensions tomorrow. There was a good reason I used 3/8's Aluminum, I think it had to be spaced 3/8's away from the prinsu. The only "Critical" measurement is height, mine came out about 1/8th inch too low, the door rubs on the awning just a tiny bit. Other than that, they work perfect.
 
I never liked how my Aisin winch was mounted in the ARB bumper. It sat super high, Blocking the entire bottom half of my grill, making the front of the truck look cluttered. As usual, I waited until 2 weeks before a major trip to start a big project. I took a lot of inspiration from @NLXTACY's ARB build thread here.

Goals:
  1. Remount Aisin winch, as low and as far towards the axle as I can reasonably get it.
  2. Switch to a synthetic winch line.
  3. Remove clutter from front of ARB bumper.
  4. Increase ariflow to intercooler and radiator.
  5. Add legitimate recovery points.
Progress so far, after a lifetimes worth of cutting and grinding, I came up with this:

After a ton of Fitting of the winch, I figured out where the Fairlead Hawse needed to be and cut a aggressive line down the front of the ARB.
I re-used some of the pieces I cut off to reform the top lip.

This took just as long as the front, I used 3/8's plate, and very carefully laid out and drilled the holes to mount the Aisin winch in a way that closely mimicked the factory setup.

I will have more pics up soon. I only have about a week left to finish this!

I just read the start to your build, pretty crazy stuff! I like to see Cruisers being used for what they were originally intended, being bulletproof transport through unforgiving terrain.
 
I need to do this 24V to 12V starter modification as well. The thought of a dead battery and not be able to push start in the middle of the jungle would be bad!

I wonder if a 70 series 12v starter would swap straight over?

Time to investigate!

It's been a little while, but I believe that a 1HZ starter is a direct bolt in.

But first, are you sure you have the 24v starter? Did your cruiser originally come from Japan?

Yes it was just imported last year from Japan. If the 1HZ starter is a straight up swap this mod might have to move little higher on the list.

Has there been a good write up on this particular modification that I could refer to?
 
Not that I know of, but some searching over in the diesel/24 volt section will probably get you quick results.

For me, getting a 1hz starter would be very expensive, since they were never sold on this continent. For you, getting parts for a dodge starter would probably be equally difficult.

Very very true
70 series parts in Papa New Guinea are extremely prevalent. However there still very expensive.

It would be conservative to say that eight out of 10 vehicles in country are Toyotas.
Land Cruisers 70 series, hilux, Hiace, coaster bus, and Dina's. Very few 80s (I only know of 5)
