very odd to see in itself...a 1978 bj with a vacuum shift...old school ...nice :)

Very odd - so not stock? Never had the fun of three speeds and vac engaged 4wd - strictly 2F onwards. Unlikely I will run into anything older in the UK as well - but now I know what to look for.

FJ-62 has vacuum shift don't they. Toyota always had the vacuum shift as an option, and the nose cone is easily switched around. Actually it was designed for it, not external shift. Look how clunky the manual shift is, compared to the elegance of the vacuum, and the early cable for the H L part of the transfer.

And that is what that yellow bj is, regualr old part time for sure.

Hell the FD switch is just push(pull) button 4wd. Us cruiser owners should be privledged that we had that way before anyone else :D

how's it going Henry, dave gore here.
I believe the 60 that's in the pics here from az is the one Blair bought from the local high school. Apparently toyota donated all the trucks from that test run to schools and other publlc agencies after the project was abandoned. When Blair picked it up it had less than 8000 original miles and had never been liscensed for the street. It was used by the physical ed dept to drag equipment around the high school football field. The T-case was a borg warner manufactured, direct bolt in quadratrac unit. I believe the Borg Warner part # was a 1306 or 1308. It's been a long time but I remember the number was close to the jeep quad, #1336.

here is a little tid bit from Henry C.

Subject: Full-time 4WD FJ40!

Recently there was a thread on a rare FJ40 with full-time four wheel
drive, and the consensus of the list was that no such thing ever
existed, and that the Cruiser in question was probably modified. Well,
in a Toyota Trails-related conversation this morning, I stumbled (and I
mean stumbled!) onto ANOTHER one of these Cruisers! Apparently, the
story behind this is that in the mid-70's Toyota was experimenting with
it's own version of the Quadratrac system (available in some of the big
Jeep wagons), and a few of the prototypes tested in the United States
eventually trickled into private ownership. One of these is a '76 FJ40
currently being used as a prototype vehicle by one of our new
advertisers (name withheld to prevent them from being swamped with calls
from curious Cruiserheads), and according to our contact, it has the
t-case lever on the opposite side, the t-case lever is labeled
"4WDHI-4WDLO-LOCK" and everything is Toyota. Look for a feature article
on this rare beast in an upcoming issue of Toyota Trails!
