I am having trouble getting a title for my newly aquired FJ40, Washington has so many damn hoops you must jump though it's almost impossible. The title has been lost and the vehicle has not been registered in 15 years. I would have to wait 3 years for a title through the DMV. I've been looking a using Broadway Title Company or another title company like them to get a title. Has anyone ever used one of these title companies? I'm a little nervous about sending them a bill of sale, my VIN and $150. Everything I read seems legal and lagit, but who knows. So if anyone has first hand experience I would love to hear about it.

I had similar trouble and used www.getnewtitle.com for $350.

Was nervous at first but they did exactly what they promised and delivered a registration for my vehicle in the state of Maine. I then took registration to my local DMV in Kentucky and applied for a Title. :)

Only one hickup...I had to have Sheriff inspect vehicle to verify VIN#, etc. but by that time I had dismantled my truck down to the frame so they wouldn't inspect the vehicle if it was not in running condition. :crybaby:

So now Im trying to get all back together again.

Reg in Maine

You can write or search St of Maine [secretary of state]and request to reg your cruiser there .They will send you the paper work and you will have to provide proof of insurance ,paid sales tax ,and about $75 and you will get a maine reg and plate. You can also pay them sales tax if you do not have proof ?

Don't you need a PO Box there for this, though? And won't the authorities come down on you after seeing you driving a truck with Maine plates for months outside of Maine?

i was thinking about buying a 77 fj40 from a guy in NH and they don't have anything for 25 year and older vehicles. No titles. Probably don't want to move there though.

Broadway title ROCKS!!! I used them for my 40 because it didn't have a title. Took 4-5 weeks or so but I got the new Bill of sale from them and it was super easy to title in my state (MO) after that. I would not hesitate one bit. With the 40 not being registered for 15 years you should have no problem. Just be sure to mail them the signed copy, not fax it. That held me up a while because they need an original signed copy. Good luck. Tim

Broadway Title is the s***! Took about 3-4 weeks to get the registration, DMV came out to verify the VIN #, and it was done. Best $150 I spent on the cruiser yet!

Often, with a little effort, you can do what the title recovery agents promise.

If you bought the vehicle from the PO in Washington, check with that person to verify that the vehicle was, at one time, registered in WA. If so, the state should be able to do a title search on the vehicle. As long as you have a valid bill of sale, they should be able to provide a title.

Sometimes, talking to a supervisor at the DMV helps, as I regularly had problems when dealing with the folks at the counters when I lived in Tacoma.

If all else fails, then try one of the title recovery agents.

Good Luck!

What's the hold-up with the WA DMV? You should be able to file an affidavit of lost title (or something like that), and along with your bill of sale you should be able to get it registered with a probationary title (again I can't remember the actual term they use).

They contact (or attempt to) the "Owner of Record", which is the last person to have legally registered it, in order to see if they have a legal claim to the vehicle. I think you have to wait a year to get the official title in your name, but it doesn't cost much and it doesn't stop you from getting tabs and driving it around during that time. I've never had to do it myself, but I know several people that have been through it.

Then when your tabs are due next year (it's important that you do this before they expire though), go apply for "Collector Vehicle" plates. It costs the same as buying yearly tabs as long as the vehicle is currently registered (this is why you have to do it before they expire), and then no more tabs EVER. The legal interpretation of what's considered "recreational use" seems to vary from officer to officer (I've asked many), but I've never had anyone hassle me about it in the slightest.

I just finished up getting a title through Broadway. I had only limited original paperwork, not enough to satisfy NYS. With the help of Broadway I now have clean NYS paperwork. One satisfied customer here.

It's kinda odd to "launder" the vehicle like this but it appears to be all legal. They are just taking advantage of the various regulations in different states to get you legal paperwork that WILL work in your state... God bless America and states rights!
