Dave, great job on the pig.
Can't wait to see it in person.

Not much going on. I did manage to find a side vent for the pig and an FJ80 steering wheel. Thanks to my buddy @ginericLC for the hook up.

The steering wheel needs some TLC, but should be way more comfortable than the stock FJ55 one.

I am concerned that the wide open vents might let in a ton of water, so I'm going to see if I can find some mesh like a Scotchbrite scrub or something to go behind the vent.

Dave, I'm thinking about adding a V between the grate and the opening in the inner fender like this picture of a Flowmaster muffler. It will divert the bulk of the water and allow it to run out the bottom of the fender and you won’t have to deal with the plugs you’ll get with a fine mesh.

Good idea. I was thinking of something like that and remembered that the hood vents I had on my 80 had a water tray that helped divert any moisture getting in. Hmm.

Guys,

I can't speak for other years, but the 71's have a water deflection shield. The water hits it, drops and runs out the front of the fender. My intake tucks in the fender in the front opening, so the water should be gone at that point.

Got some new headlights that run H4 bulbs. Cheap upgrade and better light output.

The housings are made by a company called Sirius. The glass lens model is NS-2210S and the polycarbonate lens model is NS-2209S. I think Round Eyes sells the polycarb ones for $100 a pair and Vision X sells the glass ones from $55-75 depending on who's selling them.

Here's where I got them from for $55: http://www.autoanything.com/lights/65A5582A0A0.aspx

I have the VisionX ones. The glass lense was my reason for going with them. Love seeing everyone doing light upgrades recently!

I just finished a project and this looks like a great simple way to get another project done!
Did you have to use an adapter to make them work?

Just ordered them! SWEET

I'm on the look out for a good deal on a split case. The reason I'm going with this tranny is that I needed a lower first gear to get the pig rolling with the OM617 without losing top end power.

Info from http://thewagonway.com/?p=1954:

-H42-
By and large the most common tranny found on US rigs, from 80 to 87. Was installed in two versions, short and what many call the long case model with the spacer. The spacer model appeared in april of 85 in the US, possibly earlier overseas. This tranny has the best road manners of all the manuals that were available.

-H41-
Not as common as the H42 and has very different ratio’s. No external markings to differentiante it from the H42, only easy way to tell them apart is to put them into first gear and count how many times the intput shaft goes around while you turn the ouput shaft, H41 should go around more than four times while the H42 will spin less than four for every revolution of the output shaft.

Essentially it has the same ratio’s as the H55 just minus 5th gear. Not sure if it was sold in a long case version or not. Great tranny to swap in for off road use do to the low first gear and are way cheaper than the H55, especially if you don’t want to do a gear swap. Unfortunately not the best road manners due to what many call gaps in the ratio’s. Most noticeable when mounted behind a 3B

What many consider the ultimate Landcruiser tranny, why it was never sold in the US still boggles my mind. All the same gearing as an H41 with the addition of an overdrive 5th gear. Only available in a long case version, mainly due to the fact 5th gear resides on the back side of the main gearbox and is concealed in the spacer. Pretty ingenious of Toyota to come up with this. Two trannys, same gearbox casting. Even the shift mechanism is somewhat of an add on as it’s external in relation to the other gears, comes out the top cover and hooks to the linkage in the spacer. For obvious reasons the same less than stellar road manners behind a 3B.
