my WAG the difference between the 4 and 5 speed dust cover would be some of the bracketry. the 4 speed unit mounts right off the 2 bellhousing bolts and the transfer shifter pivot.
the 5 speed would need to be shifted reward several inches to make up for the added length. not sure how/what it mounts to.

DC on rear I expect. If the 5 speed came with the shield I want it

Cover was only with the double Cardan and those weren't on the SWB 40 series. Do not believe the mid wheel base had them either. May have been some special order LWB with a five speed, I've never found a listing for one.

The 40 is a '70 model, 3/70 build date. The torque tube was removed due to the length of the H55 and split TC and replaced with the support bracket under the H55 until something more fitting can be worked in. I realize this isn't the best situation but it will have to do until I can find a better solution.

Great! I'm not really interested in another unicorn hunt.

Guess I never grew up. I enjoy searching for unicorns and trying to solve puzzles of what parts will work with what. Believe I have the support brackets figure out.

Working on shifters and boots now.

To save me reading this whole thread, is there some difference between a 81-84 FJ40 4speed tranny x-member and an 82-85 FJ4x 5speed tranny x-member?
AFAIK, the 40-series didn't use the clocked FJ70 BH, so wouldn't have gotten a clocked x-member.
Enquiring minds want to know....

Yes there is a difference. The main crossmember changed 10/82 on all models not just those with a five speed. The cradle areas have some changes. Not huge but did change. Also from what I can tell there are three versions of L brackets. One for short and mid wheel base vehicle. One for the HJ47 and one for the FJ45. The HJ47 and FJ45 are shorter for narrower frame in that area but the two styles are completely different. Toyota shows different part numbers between the early, late (10/82) but I have early late for the short wheel base and they are the same with the same number stamped into them.

Someone please post a photo of the crossmember and brackets in place. Since my 1980 did not have a transmission support bracket I am trying to determine the correct location for the assembly to support the h55f install. I have brackets for an FJ (R-FB020 & L-FB030). I have 2 cross members 1 for 82 FJ40 and 1 for a 83 BJ42. The cross members are the same length and the brackets will fit either.
Thanks

Crossmembers are different. The 83 will have better clearance for the front driveshaft. This was done on the 10/82+ because the front flange on the transfer case is further back on a five speed. Crossmember changed on all models. Have a crossmember from 84 HJ47 the the same as one from a 82 BJ42 with a H55F. Have one from a 82 FJ40 which is different.

One thing I would do to locate the crossmember with the H55F installed with the bellhousing motor mounts in place. Then install the crossmember and L brackets. That will locate the crossmember front to back. Should located up and down but have no way to know for sure until I try it myself. Have a 82 FJ40 frame that already has the correct mountng holes for the L brackets to compare it to. Also a 8/80 skid plate would help verify its correct.

I have the 83" & later crossmember. It has a deeper sweep for the front drive shaft. My concern now is proper location since I have no mounting holes in my frame. My only resort may be to wait until I install the h55f, attach the support assembly and mark for the drill holes then. I need a part number for the correct isolator also. It is my understanding that they are different.

Isolated is part number 12371-61020. The rubber should have a F molded into it verses a B or H for B and H engines.

Do these help? Sorry about the mud. I can take measurements too if you need

It’s an 83, originally an FJ and someone put a 3B and H55 in. Not sure if that crossmember is from the H42 that came in the truck or if it’s specific to the H55, I’m sure someone else here will be able to say.

The crossmember was the same on all models from 10/82 on. The L brackets were the same on all short and mid wheel base 4X series from 8/80 on. The isolator mounted in the same location on the H41/H42/H55F so crossmember would be the same.
