I've got an H55 and a mid 80 60 series split case. Love it been driving it as a daily driver for about 3 years now - great upgrade.

I installed a rear of transfer case disc brake set up when I did the conversion - I have never been happy with it. It never did a good job of holding (couldn't seem to get enough mechanical advantage to lock the caliper tight enough) and now the brake pads are worn out. When I called for replacements I'm told I need to buy the caliper, disc and pads as a set. So I'm looking for alternatives.

Has anyone had good results from a line lock system? Anybody have a good solution?

I'd love to find a transfer-case drum setup - (like OEM) but they just don't seem to ever become available.
Ideas from anyone that has a acceptable transfer case e-brake?

Thanks folks

Save time, money, and headache and upgrade to a later axle with ebrake drum.

70 axle is same width, needs only minor modifications, and there available....

My two cents, having scoured earth and obtaining the OE e brake parts.

Would've been money ahead to have just swapped the rear axle.

My line lock worked great and I'm going to reuse it on the new build.
I think I have another valve and some of the other parts needed if you want to come by and grab them I will show you what I did and and give them to you.

Can I get it with a 60 series ratio? Drive shaft mods? Yeah I'm gonna have to admit I'm not going to find the OE stuff.

I try and keep my ride all Toyota just to make it simple - because I need simple! Also don't want to walk home.

Thanks

J Mack ------- I'd love to visit again and see how your build is going in person. The schooling on the line lock wold be really helpful too. With Winter on us are you still around the house most of the time? I'll call before coming down.

Thirds interchange and no drive shaft mods necessary.

Tucker's suggestion is more eloquent, but dunno how hard the 40FFs are to source.

Tucker how late of an axle? Think 79 and up are the later ones? Thanks!

I'm around most of the time kicking around the shop.
I had to build 20 rifles before Christmas so the Pig got pushed back for a few weeks but I'm going to get back going tomorrow working on a few Pig projects.
Just call first to confirm I here and you're welcome to come out anytime.

OBB,

On the 40 axle, mebbe worth contacting J Mack's buddy, Eric (forgot user name), since you're in that neck of the woods.

Won't swear by it, but thought he may have had at some point when
I was considering last year.

Georg at Valley Hybrids has had before, as has Dave at Genesis, in the event all other efforts fail.

Joe K (again, forgot user name) in North Texas has 70 axles that are fresh off the dock, but believe they'll need a little work in coating and possibly brakes.

.

That's Eric Vogt (@ginericLC). Jason (@arcteryx) might have some 40 stuff down in Austin.

HARdHARHAR!!! sage advice, my friend;)

Jim enjoyed the visit yesterday. Your build is absolutely incredible! First Class quality all the way! Will be a really special Pig when your done! Hope I can come back again and again as you make more progress! I've decided to go the line lock route after our discussion.

By the way the Alaska thing will play again tonight

I was going to try and copy it on to a CD for you but you should be able to record it tonight.

Thanks again

Touché.....you got me again, so go ahead and tell me you told me so.

I'm one of those hard headed types that learn by experience.

You can tell me all damn day the fire's hot and will burn, but I gotta stick my hand in it, to experience for myself......after, standing on the pulpit preaching to all that, yes, in fact, the fire IS hot.

Small sampling a of just Mud specific:

1. "Do not buy an LX if you're gonna pull the flares, cladding, roof rack and spoiler."

-Unknown

162 body holes welded later, and I concur.

2. "Do not think you can maintain predictable handling with a +4" lifted 80. You can't have your cake and eat it too, so trailer your wheeler."

-Christo Slee

Rolled, uber built 450 and I concur.

3. "Do not immediately begin the restoration process on that Pig. Getting mechanically sound first and drive it."

-Pighead

No explanation necessary, but wholeheartedly agree, retrospectively.

4. "Do not rebuild the '76 2F in the manner planned. Swap for a running late 2F and drive it."

-unknown

Again, no explanation necessary.

5. "Do not worry with split case a brake, OE Pig power steering, OE Pig AC, 3F crap on an early 2F block, rebuilt with late 2F internals."

-entire 'sty

Yep.

6. "Pull that damn 1F out of that '72 and throw it off to the side of the carport, where it belongs, and drop a 350 Chebby in the damn thing, call it a day."

"You gets what you gets and you pays your monies."

-CDan.

In retrospect, 60 axles front and rear, 60 power steering would've been the better way to have approached the '76, BUT......

Now, I'd sink a 1FZ-FE/H151F/HF1A in the thing and :flipoff2: the detractors.

Bahahahahahahaha.

Just a heads up, line-locks will not pass safety inspection if your state requires them. They are not a secondary brake, though they work fine to hold your vehicle if you don't have state inspections ;)

Tucker
For now we still live in free America (Idaho) were we register our sex offenders instead of our guns and we don’t have vehicle inspections. ;)

AH-MEN!!!!!!!! Just another of the reasons I left Kalifornia on my retirement! :pig:

why hasn't anyone done a cable operated hydraulic caliper back there?

Ha ha... that is my thought when I started reading this. The last time I changed the rear pads and rotors on my Civic I thought the rotors would be the perfect size for a split-case mounted secondary brake. The calipers also have a cable feed for the park/e-brake. I never got any further than thinking the size looked right. The trick would be a caliper and cable mount.

When I have lots of $ for an H55 and lots of time to dick around with this kind of stuff I'll let you all know how it goes!
