The correct combination for clutch cover and throwout bearing in this case is:

Clutch cover: 31210-60162
Throwout bearing: 31230-60181

For those of you who run VINs through ToyoDIY and come up with: 31210-60160 and 31230-60180, these parts are the same. The numbers quoted above are the numbers which supersede these other components.

Alright so I've been collecting parts for my 5 speed swap for myself and two other mud members. One of the guys requested a different input bearing part number but it also came from an 80 series... I took a pic of the one I bought next to his. It looks like the earlier version is longer...

Sorry for the upside down image...

My question is, will both of these work?? What happens when one is shorter than the other?

My assumption is that each one works with a specific clutch cover. I have already bought 3 clutch covers which are the same and pictured below

This clutch cover is part number:

31210-60162

I would love some insight on this. Should I be getting a different bearing? Will it make that rattle noise that others have experienced?

60130 is for the 1HZ and 1HDT diesels, 60181 is for the gassers, as far as I know.

So on the h151f behind my 1hd-t I should use the 60130??

Or is there a different part number I should get?

Hey Nick, thanks for the info, that longer bearing (if used) could cause the bearing to always be pressed (slightly) against the face of the clutch cover. It likely wouldn't make much noise (at first) but the throwout bearing would wear out extremely quickly and then become very noisy. The throwout bearing is only designed to spin when you have the clutch pedal fully depressed. It drives me crazy when folks drive with their left foot resting on the clutch pedal; that's how you wear that stuff out prematurely!

Holy crap! I must be half zombie after working 15 hours all night. Now I see the diesel bearing is the longer one, forget everything said above.....:meh:

Does that explain the shorter input shaft on the HZ/HD-Ts?

H151 having different input shaft in 1FZ then it have in diesels .. mmmm never see that ..

I was mostly concerned about the combination of the particular clutch cover we are using with respect to the throwout bearing. Even IF the throwout bearing is right, I haven't heard if the clutch cover is in fact correct for a diesel.

Landcruiser80 used the same clutch BUT he used 60180 not 60130 which people say is in fact the correct one. He says he gets noise when the clutch is not depressed.

I'm still confused why the bearing would be different.

The 1FZ and 1HD have the same trans (minus different bell housings) with same input shaft. The clutch cover/disc are going to be the same so why is the bearing different?

Looking at this bearing for H151 mated to a 1HDT (1998) and it shows: 31230-60180.
I compared this to a H151 mated to a 1997 1FZFE and got same number.

I think the difference was in earlier years for the 1HDT only. For HDJ80 example, in 1992 the clutch cover had a part number 31210-60120 with release bearing 31230-60130 while the later year (1997) had 31210-60160 and 31230-60180. The switch likely occurred with facelift but I don't know with certainty. @OGBeno

The 60180 shows up for both earlier and later year 1FZFE

60180- All years of 1FZFE
60130- Earlier years of 1HDT

It’s the fork that varies - Need to match the bearing to the fork

Interesting. I had a mismatched bearing issue with my 1fz-fe.
Maybe it was the new fork that was mismatched.
I'll have to go back and look at my parts orders.

Certainly the case with VDJs, sometimes you don’t know your fork style until you’ve got the box out. I’ve mixed and matched HDJ/HZJ/FZJ clutch bearings/forks before and always copied the fork to bearing set and never had any dramas. I’ve generally got a few bearings around to compare - sometimes just swapping retainer springs is all it takes
