I bet once it was out the mechanics door it would be 12k.
If you're on the fence, it would at least be worth considering. I ran the numbers recently for a Subaru with a suspected blown head gasket. A replacement engine was one of the cheapest options (with DIY free labor - the delta with a paid labor would have been a lot more).

The UR motor is a very tight fit in the 460. Some folks pull the body.

The engines I saw once I looked closer were all over $6000. Figure at least another $1500 in incidental parts while its convenient and an easy 4k for labor as it will probably take 10 to 12 Hours for a tech thats not working ok the 460s every day.

There are a bunch of $2k to $4k 1UR direct injection motors available from LSes and GSes but that's definitely a unique long block from a GX, since ours is detuned and equiped with port injection.

Is the shop planning on doing the heads while the engine is in the vehicle? I had assumed they'd be pulling the motor to do the heads - that's what I'd personally do my 470 needed the job, as well as what I've done in the past on Subarus. From having done headers on the 470, everything is suuuuper tight to work around and it would be hard to keep things clean/organized with the engine in the vehicle (but not impossible).

Slowly getting there with the platform. Gotta make the drawers, add some vibration dampeners, sand and paint, finishing touches, and it’ll be ready. Probably another 3 months 🤣.

It even forms a couch.

Would it be cheaper to swap in an LS2? 😁
3UR swap would certainly be interesting :). You or maybe someone else posted about that a few years ago! It must be possible....and then you'd have a GX570!

I’m replacing the engine in my 460 right now. Found the only engine available at the time for $6,500 with 63,000 miles. Labor underway now. Will report back on that cost. Then, once the old engine is torn down, we will repair it (assuming broken lifter is the issue) and try to recoup some cash.

In my case an engine swap probably wasn’t necessary, but it was the fastest way to get the truck going again. Without a final diagnosis on the issue of cylinder 8 misfiring this seemed like the right direction to go.

This will especially be the case if the problem is worse than a lifter or I can sell the repaired engine without too much time into it.

I'm toying with that idea actually if my engine bites the dust. 😁

There is a 460 owner in Guam that did a 3UR-FE swap

Okay, this may only apply to California, but for me, my concerns would be:
  1. Getting all the electrical sorted out so you don't have a Christmas tree on the dash when it starts up.
  2. The engine to trans adapter plate and any other adapters needed, e.g.: engine mounts, fan and radiator, etc.
  3. Exhaust? May have to go with custom headers if the factory manifolds don't route correctly.
  4. May require a lot of banging and cutting.
  5. Relegated to having to do your own maintenance and service from then on.
This is coming from previous experience from having done a 215 ci aluminum block V8 (same motor used in '60's Pontiac Tempest and later in the Triumph TR9) swap into my '74 Vega wagon. And that was done in the late '70's with points and rotor, no ECM or smog requirements. It was a time when you could open pop the hood and look down at the engine and still see straight through to the ground! No plastic under the hood. Doing that swap, I don't know how many trips I made to the auto parts store for parts, all the time running straight headers! Till, I finished the project.

@r2m, my post was half-serious :). But in theory - since the 1UR and 3UR engines share the vast majority of their parts - including bolting to the same A760F transmission - and a used 3UR should be easy to find - such a swap may be possible. The deck height of the 3UR is taller than the 1UR, so fitting it in the chassis and attaching it to the 1UR exhaust might be problem. It's not something I'd have the time or desire to trailblaze on my own if I was a 460 owner, but it would be in theory an awesome, all-Toyota mod if someone else took the time to figure it out :). Who wouldn't love a GX460 with 381 HP/401 TQ!

I was thinking more towards the Chevy small block that was mentioned a couple times. ;)
Although there's a fair amount of info on dropping in a LS into 100 series Landcruisers.

Ha-ha! I don't do social media either other than Linkedin (kind of need to) and this forum.
If I need Facebook, I glom onto my wife's. I have her login on my phone. 😁 Right now she's selling my band saw, and I'll sometimes look for an old school friend with her account.

At this point if there were mounts and adapter plates I would consider a L96 swap. But not if I have to use a GM transmission. They are awful.

My last 2 Express 3500s had L96s

Edit...
Just sold the band saw on my wife's Facebook Marketplace! A fresh c-note for me!

Was a fatal accident in a 460 a week ago. Was hit by a box truck and killed a small child. The third row of the truck was just gone.

Box truck driver was not sober and not paying attention.
